Let's Start with Something Positive...

Now Introducing 2022 Incoming Class

We recently had the opportunity to be the casual observer for an event that was simple, yet remarkable. It buoyed my spirit to such a degree; I must share it with you.

About a year ago, our friend Tony Salazar from University of Colorado reached out to propose a road trip by then interim Pres. Todd Saliman and the CU regents. They would be making stops around the state including the Action22 footprint. During their meeting with us, among other things, we challenged their team to be more of a presence in our rural communities and find ways to collaborate to ensure more individuals had access to higher education. I am happy to report they accepted and are delivering on that challenge.

Last Thursday night, UCCS Chancellor Venkat Reddy and CU Pres., Todd Saliman, along with the Regents hosted a welcome dinner for the incoming class for both schools. There were students from Pueblo, Lamar, Hoene, Florence as well as transfer students from PCC. The Union Depot was packed with beaming parents and grandparents. They called each incoming student up to be recognized. The big black bag they are holding in the picture is a laundry bag (how clever is that?). They were also each handed a #10 envelope from community champion, Janelle Quick, Exec. Direct of the Pueblo Hispanic Education Foundation. We can’t say enough good things about her and her efforts.

I must tell you; I was a bit emotional watching all those students, especially when I heard the gasps as they opened those envelopes from the PHEF. I then made the mistake of looking back for the reactions of the parents. Que the waterworks as I could see how much value was placed on the opportunity to add higher education to their family portfolio. Gratitude and irrepressible pride all around.

It is true we are persevering during heavy times. We need to take time to highlight the bright spots. I hope you take a moment to feel gratitude for diligent efforts to drive education to the next level, whatever that is.

All Best,
