#stopAsianHate: A Message from our CTA BSA

On Tuesday, March 16th, eight people, including six Asian women, were murdered in a shooting spree at Asian-owned spas in Georgia. "What happened in Atlanta is not an isolated incident, but a horrific example of a large rising tide of anti-Asian racism," said the statement released by the Chinese Canadian National Council's Toronto Chapter. The CTA Black Students Alliance stands alongside our Asian peers to combat Anti-Asian racism.

What we can do:

  • Educate ourselves about the oppressive history of Asian communities in Canada: From the Head-Tax to the Chinese Immigration Act to the Japanese-Canadian internment camps
  • Debunk the myth of the “Model Minority.” This myth attributes East-Asian success to “hard work ethics and good family values.” This myth assumes that all Asians belong to a monocultural group and it makes invisible the struggles of many marginalized Asians. It also gives rise to greater tolerance of what is referred to as “polite” racism: The smart Asian student. Furthermore, it enforces the idea that other communities of colour are not hard working. It pits people of colour against each other
  • Call out Anti-Asian racism when you see it. Do not be a silent bystander. Speak up. Condemn these attacks and anti-Asian racism
