I Heart British TV Updates & News

Welcome to autumn! We actually crossed into the new season earlier this week, but since we don't want to be a nuisance in anyone's inbox, we don't email every day and we can't always say these things on the actual day.

We hope your weekend is going well, and that you're finding plenty of great British TV shows to watch. Here at the I Heart British TV headquarters, we've been enjoying the new Van der Valk (on PBS or PBS Masterpiece on Amazon). Fair warning: It's not for everyone. There are some sexual and religious storylines that may bother some.

On the lighter side of things, there's a new season of Jack Whitehall's Travels With My Father on Netflix. It's a delightful series in which a comedian travels the world with his father - with no shortage of awkwardness and hilarity.

This Week in British TV History

25 years ago this week, the 1995 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice premiered on BBC One. Starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, it was both critically acclaimed and popular with viewers - and to this day, many consider it to be the definitive Pride & Prejudice adaptation.

The adaptation is credited with a 50% increase in membership to the Jane Austen Society of North America back in 1996 (we wonder how much of that was down to the lake scene).

To celebrate the occasion, BritBox released a newly remastered version of the adaptation. If you've never had the pleasure of watching this one, I can't think of a better time to do it.

Coming This Week...

On September 28th, check out The Advocates on Acorn TV. This retro legal drama is set in Edinburgh and offers interesting contrast between the respectable world of Scottish lawyers and advocates and the less savoury existence of the city's prostitutes and drug addicts. The Black Velvet Gown also comes to Acorn TV that day.

There won't be any more premieres on BritBox in September, but look for four more seasons of All Creatures Great & Small on October 1st.

If you haven't already gotten a copy of The British TV Streaming Guide, you're missing out! Feedback is overwhelmingly positive so far, and there are now two options for purchase:
  • Buy Direct HERE - Get the lowest price + a bonus British-themed vinyl sticker (2-3")
  • Get it on Amazon - It's a little more expensive, but it comes with free Prime shipping if you have a membership.
A few of the comments we received this week on Facebook (surnames and faces blanked for privacy):
"It is great...and so thorough. I hope you guys can make a living doing what you love: researching and watching British TV. There are many shows I wouldn't have considered watching without this guide."
"Just got  mine today. Can't wait to look through it! What a great idea and I can't imagine how much work was involved. Thank you!"
"Omg we love it!! Thanks so much I ordered some more for gifts so much time and work went into it!! And such a god price! It's so worth it!!"

The guide gives you a printed and indexed list of British TV shows streaming on all the major US streaming services with British content - and it's longer than you might think. There are roughly 2000 different titles across 18 different streaming services, and the whole thing is a hefty 164 pages long.

Royal Mint Issues Agatha Christie Commemorative Coin - October 2020 marks 100 years since Agatha Christie's first book, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, was published.

To celebrate, the Royal Mint has issued a £2 commemorative coin (which you can buy online if you're not in the UK and paying cash in stores). It's a miniature piece of art, and the edge even features the words "LITTLE GREY CELLS" - the infamous words of Hercule Poirot.
