Featured program: Mentor A Vet-NYC

Did you know?
Almost 2,000 new veterans come to New York City to attend school every year. Help veterans and their families navigate life after service -- and navigate NYC -- by becoming a mentor. Both veterans and civilians are encouraged to sign up. Learn more about DVS's Mentor a Vet-NYC program here or email info@veterans.nyc.gov

Let's help our newest veterans and their families feel at home in NYC!

Highlights: DVS Public Engagement in September

Jeff Roth & James McCloughan
The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action a service member can receive. On September 6th, DVS honored James McCloughan, this administration’s first Medal of Honor recipient. Deputy Commissioner Jeff Roth presented Mr. McCloughan a certificate acknowledging McCloughan’s heroism in combat and dedication to our country.
DBW at LIU Veterans Resource Center
It is a wonderful thing when academic institutions recognize the value of student veterans. Long Island University is one such institution. On September 19th, they opened the LIU Student Veterans Resources Center to meet the full range of veterans’ needs. Assistant Commissioner Darlene Brown-Williams, PhD, gave congratulatory remarks at the opening.
Commissioner Loree Sutton, MD, and DVS General Counsel & Director of Intergovernmental Affairs Eric Henry testified before the New York City Council's Committee on Veterans for its annual Oversight Hearing. Under the leadership of Chair Eric Ulrich, the hearing covered a full range of topics from veteran housing and employment to outreach and mental health. A video of the hearing can be found here.

"You are not alone across time"

2,500 years ago, the ancient Greeks performed plays for thousands of citizen-soldiers. Their tales are just as relevant today as they were then. Join us for our next Theater of War performance, led by DVS Public Artist in Residence Bryan Doerries. Check www.theaterofwar.nyc for more information.

Families serve, too

DVS acknowledges the 5.5 million military caregivers in the US through our partnership with the Elizabeth Dole Foundation's Hidden Heroes program.

New York City has been designated by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation as a model city for leading the way in highlighting the role of military caregivers. Learn more about how you can help military caregivers by contacting vetsthrivenyc@veterans.nyc.gov
