Highlights: Housing Homeless Veterans
|
|
|
October 27th was move in day for five formerly homeless veterans at Stanley Commons.
Housing and Support Services is DVS' most robust line of action, tackling the issue of chronic veteran homelessness. DVS works in collaboration with other city agencies, including New York City Housing Authority and New York City Department of Buildings, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and various shelters and housing complexes.
The Stanley Commons, a 240-unit building complex, is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's 10-year affordable housing plan.

Veterans Day 2017
DVS kicked off Veterans Day 2017 at Gracie Mansion with a Veterans Day Breakfast. The featured service was the U.S.Air Force. The crowd then moved to Madison Square Park for the Veterans Day Wreath-Laying Ceremony and the Annual Parade, led by Grand Marshal Buzz Aldrin.

Salute to Service: Theater of War
The 9/11 Memorial & Museum hosted a special performance of Theater of War as part of the annual Salute to Service, a tribute honoring veterans, active-duty service members, and their families. The performance was followed by a powerful audience discussion led by a panel of 9/11 and military community members.

Fighting the Mental Health Stigma
On November 1st, DVS hosted a free film screening and panel discussion of the A&E Network's film "Call Me Crazy." Following the screening, panelists Annette Tucker Osborne, Sharran Chambers-Murphy, and Dr. Claire Green-Forde (pictured here) led participants in a discussion of their experiences and conversations about mental illness.

Veterans Justice Symposium
On November 15th, Nicole Branca, DVS Assistant Commissioner of Housing, attended the 2017 Veterans Justice Symposium, hosted by Brooklyn Legal Services. Commissioner Carmelyn Malalis, NYC Commission on Human Rights, gave the keynote address. AC Branca and other panelists discussed the challenges of ending veterans' homelessness.

NYC Well
NYC Well counselors are available at any hour of any day in almost any language. They can provide suicide prevention and crisis counseling, peer support and short-term counseling, assistance scheduling appointments or accessing other mental health services, and follow-ups.

Veterans in Residence
The WeWork Veterans in Residence program is an initiative in partnership with Bunker Labs aimed at helping US military veterans pursue their life’s work. Whether a veteran is starting a new business, looking to build their network, or trying to find their next career - the WeWork Veterans in Residence program provides veterans the space, services, and community they need.

Community Healthcare Network
Community Healthcare Network offers specialized trained staff to serve patients who have served in the military and their families. They offer a wide range of services and take most insurance.

DVS Office Hours
Each month, DVS holds Office Hours at Civic Hall (118 W 22nd St., 12th Fl). This gathering provides a time for veterans, service members, and family to voice their opinions and concerns, and discuss issues impacting the NYC veteran community.
Our next office hours will be held on Wednesday, January 24th from 5-7 pm.
