For these veterans, the secret to crossing political divides starts with a beer

PORTLAND, Maine — Earlier this month, about 60 people, mostly veterans and family members, gathered for a beer and some civil conversation at Definitive Brewing Co. in Portland, Maine.

"I was joking that veterans are the referees that America needs right now. I think it's helpful to have veterans in the room because we don't start a conversation with 'who cares more about America?' It's just sort of assumed," said Allison Jaslow, who leads the group Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA).

IAVA started holding public meetings, usually at brewpubs, during the heat of the presidential campaign last year. They called the events "Pints and Patriotism." The idea was to make a space for a civil conversation across partisan lines. A Message From Mayor Adams:
Each week DVS shares a brief update about how our administration is getting stuff done for New Yorkers.
Our administration works every day to create a more affordable city for every New Yorker, and that means putting money back into the pockets of working-class New Yorkers. Last week, we announced the increase of minimum pay rate for app-based delivery workers once again, up to $21.44 per hour from our original fair wages set in 2023. Thanks to these efforts, the apps these workers deliver for have now paid them an additional $700 million in wages over the last two years. This groundbreaking policy has made life easier for delivery workers and their families all across the five boroughs. At DVS, we believe finding meaningful employment that provides a living wage is not only essential to individual well-being, but vital to building thriving and equitable communities. That's why we've partnered with organization's like Edge4Vets who get results for the NYC Veteran community, facilitating their long-term employment in careers with upward mobility. Visit nyc.gov/vetjobs to see how DVS can help you in your career.
