GW4 Director's Update
December 2022

Welcome to the GW4 Newsletter: your regular digest of GW4 news, funding and development opportunities.

Last month we opened our latest round of the GW4 Generator Fund. I encourage all collaborative research and innovation communities across the Alliance to apply for up to £20K. The funding can be used to develop new or existing ideas and help deliver a step change in world-class research and innovation.

I was delighted to attend the ICE South West Civil Engineering Awards Ceremony, along with GW4 Climate Alliance Manager, Gro Slotsvik. It was great to celebrate some of the fantastic civil engineering projects strengthening our region’s climate resilience.

This year has been another incredible year for GW4. We have so many achievements from the past 12 months to celebrate across our four universities and beyond. Some of my personal highlights include hearing from our research and innovation communities at the GW4 Generator Fund Showcase, meeting this year's GW4 Cubicle cohort, working with the Western Gateway on developing and mapping our region's Hydrogen Ecosystem, leading the British Academy ECR Network South West Hub, and further supporting our technicians with the new GW4WARD Collaboration Fund. We also strengthened our relationships with external partners including officially launching our partnership with the Western Gateway. Take a look at more of our highlights below and share yours on twitter #GW4highlights2022.

As for next year, I am looking forward to continuing to advance our collaborative research and innovation, especially in our strategic research areas, to address the global challenges we face. We will also be celebrating our 10 year anniversary, so watch this space for more exciting updates on that!

For now though, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all colleagues for their hard work and commitment this year and wish you all a peaceful and enjoyable break. Merry Christmas.
Open Funding Call for Collaborative Research and Innovation Communities
The GW4 Building Communities Generator Fund is now open and collaborative research and innovation communities across the four universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter can apply for up to £20K funding.

Now in its fourth year, this initiative supports both the creation of new GW4 communities and the development of the strongest ideas emerging from our existing communities.

The GW4 Generator Fund is an open call and applications across all areas of research and innovation are invited. Applications from Early Career Research (ECR) communities are particularly welcome and supported

GW4 leads international AMR project

A GW4 led international antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research community has been awarded £50K by the global coordinator the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR) to investigate the spread of antimicrobial resistance by exploring how the resistance genes spread on plasmids.

This collaborative network called Tools for the Epidemiology of AMR Plasmids, One-Health Transmission and Surveillance (TEAPOTS) aims to establish generic standards and tools for AMR plasmid epidemiology and enhanced surveillance.

Transforming GW4 universities into 'Living Labs'

The GW4 Living Labs pilot engages students, researchers, non-academic staff, local authorities, community organisations, and industry in developing Living Labs for Net Zero Transformation. This project focuses on emissions from our supply chains and travel (Scope 3 emissions), which represent our greatest opportunity to cut emissions.

The final project workshop, on 28 February 2023, will look at Scope 3 emissions in Southwest England and South Wales.

GW4 Crucible Alumni Lightning Talks

As part of our new lightning talk sessions for the GW4 Crucible Alumni Network, past GW4 Crucible participants are sharing their current research on Health and Wellbeing.

Each short talk will be followed by a Q&A session. It is an excellent opportunity to keep in contact with existing collaborators and identify potential new partnerships.

The next session will take place on 18 January from 2-3pm (online via zoom).
