GW4 Alliance Update
December 2020

Welcome to your festive GW4 newsletter update.

For many, 2020 has been a year like no other. While I have only been with GW4 for a month, looking back at our highlights I am proud of the amazing work we have achieved together, from developing new research communities and launching our GW4WARD initiative to support our technical staff, to developing strategic alliances in Climate and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) to help solve these global and social challenges. Please share your favourite GW4 moments of 2020 with us on twitter #GW4highlights2020.

Collaboration is at the heart of our Alliance and in response to the Coronavirus crisis, it has been inspiring to see so many staff and students work together, not only across GW4 but with our partners and other organisations to develop world-class research, provide vital supplies to front line workers, and share ideas and techniques.

As for next year, I am optimistic for the future - together we are able to adapt and respond to challenges, and more positively I believe we are well placed to take advantage of new opportunities. I am looking forward to continuing to advance our collaborative research and innovation, especially in our strategic research areas of Climate and AMR to address the global challenges we face.

For now though, I would like to thank all colleagues for their hard work and commitment this year and wish you all a safe, peaceful and enjoyable break. I look forward to seeing you in the new year, and hopefully in person, soon!

Generator Awards Funding Call

Researchers from across the alliance are invited to apply for up to £20,000 to support the creation of new communities and develop existing collaborations across the Alliance.

The GW4 Generator Awards are designed to support research communities of scale and capability, delivering a step change in world-class research, not achievable by a single institution. Projects with a focus on the Global Challenges Research Fund, the Industrial Challenge Strategy Fund and, new for this round, those with a Net Zero focus are also encouraged; however, funding is not limited to addressing these initiatives.

Deadline for applications is Monday 8 February 2021.

3Rs self-assessment tool

The NC3Rs have developed an online free-to-use 3Rs self-assessment tool for research groups. The tools can help users to identify new 3Rs opportunities by assessing their current activities and providing feedback on how well they are implementing the 3Rs. The feedback includes suggestions for improvement with examples from other organisations. Multiple evaluations can be carried out over time, allowing the group to benchmark their progress.

If you are PI and interested in completing a self-assessment for you research group then visit the 3Rs self-assessment tools website. If you have any queries on this or need help with submitting a self-assessment please contact Jess Eddy, the NC3Rs Regional Programme Manager for GW4.

GW4 Diversity in Physics Conference

Across the GW4 Alliance, Physics and Astronomy departments marked LGBTQ+ STEM Day by jointly hosting an online conference ‘Diversity in Physics’ on 18th November. The conference aimed to highlight and discuss some of the issues surrounding diversity within the physics academic community.

PRISM Exeter also held an event as part of their ‘PRISM Speakers’ series to coincide with LGBTQ+ STEM Day. GW4 supported both events and we look forward to promoting future activities and events celebrating diversity and inclusion. You can watch videos and download speaker slides from the events online.
