GW4 Director's Update
July 2021

Welcome to the GW4 newsletter: your regular digest of GW4 news, funding and development opportunities.

This month I am delighted to announce the Medical Research Council has awarded our GW4 BioMed2 MRC Doctoral Training Partnership funding for 64 studentships over the next three years. It’s fantastic MRC have recognised the quality and importance of our collaborative and interdisciplinary BioMed DTP by increasing the numbers of students supported. By working together across the alliance, we provide exceptional research opportunities for our students, and give them the skills required to tackle some of the most difficult societal challenges.

I have also been focused on our GW4 Accelerating to Net Zero initiative, working with our academic ambassadors and others to develop an initial proposition document to place our region and the UK at the forefront of global efforts to reach net zero. Last week I was pleased to represent GW4 at a roundtable event at which the Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Security, Robert Courts MP, also attended. The event brought together the region's aerospace and aviation cluster to discuss the challenges and opportunities to accelerate decarbonisation of the sector and discuss the recently launched Jet Zero consultation. We have placed a whole systems approach at the centre of our net zero initiative to accelerative just and equitable transitions towards sustainable and socially inclusive mobility.

Don't forget, those of you who are working or interested in climate research or antimicrobial resistance research can join our two new GW4 Alliances. Details on these and more GW4 news and opportunities below.
GW4 BioMed2 MRC Doctoral Training Partnership Secures Major Boost
The Medical Research Council (MRC) has awarded the GW4 BioMed2 MRC Doctoral Training Partnership funding for 64 studentships over the next three years across our GW4 Alliance of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter Universities.

It is part of a £79m investment by the MRC to support doctoral training for the next three years. The GW4 BioMed2 MRC Doctoral Training Partnership is one of 17 successful DTPs to receive the awards across 34 UK Research Organisations.

The partnership, led by Cardiff University, will train postgraduate research students in three main areas: neuroscience and mental health; infection, immunity, antimicrobial resistance and repair; and population health sciences.

GW4 AMR Alliance Launch

Last month we showcased GW4's collaborative and complementary research strengths at the launch event of our new ‘One Health’ antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research consortium.

Over 150 guests attended the online symposium, with lively presentations and panels discussions covering key topics including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on AMR, climate change as a potential driver of AMR, and the importance of understanding the socio-cultural dimensions in adopting a global One Health approach to AMR.

VSimulators in Action

To showcase the recently opened VSimulators commercial and research facility at the University of Exeter we are pleased to present a new video demonstrating the facility in action.

The filming took place at the state-of-the-art GW4 member facility at Exeter Science Park, which has the unique capability to recreate different environments either physically or virtually, immersing research volunteers in a simultaneous experience.

The VSimulators project started life as a GW4 collaborative research community and is part of a world class national research facility located at both the GW4 member institutions of Bath and Exeter.

New Generation Thinkers 2022

The Arts Humanities and Research Council (AHRC) and BBC Radio3's New Generation Thinkers scheme gives early career researchers the chance to make programmes with the BBC to share their research with the public.

Previous members of the scheme have included GW4 researchers and GW4 Crucible Alumni. The AHRC are running currently webinars for anyone interested in applying and it would be great to see more GW4 researchers represented in the 2022 AHRC and BBC New Generation Thinkers scheme.
