One of my Favorite Images

I have been re-reading the book of Proverbs for my personal devotions last week and this week. While many may know a proverb or two, one of my favorite images of God appears in this book. It happens in Chapter 1 verse 20-22:
”Out in the open wisdom calls aloud,
she raises her voice in the public square;
on top of the wall she cries out,
at the city gate she makes her speech:
How long will you who are simple love your simple ways?
How long will mockers delight in mockery
and fools hate knowledge?”

I often lift this image up because it speaks to a need to listen to God in the midst of a busy life. This image of God’s wisdom crying out in the midst of all the other voices in a public square, hits the nail on the head for me.

While it was not the author’s image, I picture 42nd street in NYC right at Times Square. The hustle and bustle of everything happening. There with all the Elmos, singing cowboys, and lights flashing, another voice is also crying out, namely the voice of God’s wisdom.

How do we hear it among the other voices? How do we tune into it?

For me, this is life. There are all sorts of other activities drawing us away from being with God during our day. There are all sorts of other things asking for our attention. There are other voices asking us to listen to them rather than to God.

Yet, to be in prayer means quieting all those other activities and being still to listen to the voice of God. It is allowing the hustle to keep happening, but taking a break from it all to allow God to speak in that moment.

For me, this is why I love this image found in Proverbs. It truly is wisdom.
