Baptism is a Big Deal

If you ever want to get a group of pastors into a quickly heated discussion, ask about baptismal practices. I write that jokingly, but if there is something in the church pastors take very seriously, it is baptism. The reason why is it a big deal.

This week, I confessed when I sat in the pews, I didn’t always treat baptisms as a big deal and looked at them as they just meant a longer service was going to take place. I admitted in the sermon I was completely wrong about my past views.

Baptism is a really big deal.

It is a moment when the curtain between heaven and earth seems to melt away within the waters. It is a reminder that God does indeed break into our world and is an active participant rather than a distant, hands off, far away God. God is present in baptism.

This is why clergy often take it seriously and are pretty protective of it. It isn’t pastors are being cruel when an odd request comes or someone just wants to get their child “done” because the restaurant already has reservations on that day, but rather it is a moment when community comes together to witness the holy in our midst. There is beauty in the moment and it should be cared for as such.

In other words, baptism is a big deal.
