Happy New Year

Those words in the title always bring hope, don’t they? There is a moment right at 12:01AM where the world seems to come together just for a moment. I’ve watched Dick Clark’s New Year show every year just so I can hear “New York, New York” play at midnight and see the joy in every person’s face at that moment.

Then the year starts to kick in. Resolutions get created and a new path is forged.

Personally, I stopped making resolutions a long time ago. I found, like many people, I would stick to them and somewhere around January 4th, I would fall back to my old habits and routines.

One year, I decided to change my language from resolution to covenant. While it may seem like semantics, for me, a covenant holds a little bit more water than a simple resolution.

Covenants are scriptural and are agreements between humankind and God. They are not meant to be broken and are to be held at the highest honor. The earliest covenant, for example, is between God and Noah where there was a covenant to not flood the Earth. Another was between Abraham and God that the Jewish people will always be God’s people.

Each year, I take the idea of a covenant and make a promise to God and to myself to grow in some way. It might be to read through a section of Scripture for a year or to see try to see myself as God sees me. It might be to care for another without complaint.  Covenants are different from resolutions.

This year my covenant was for growth, looking for places which stretch me a bit to learn something new.
