The Life of a Disciple Part 7

We come to the end of this 7 part series on Discipleship with the last portion of the wheel. I will be taking a break through August and will resume the devotional in September as I am teaching a few places this summer and cannot depend that WiFi will be present. So, it is fitting the last week of the devotional is the last week of the series.

“When did you make the choice to follow Jesus?” I was asked this at a county fair from a street preacher looking to win a few souls at the fair. My answer to him was “this morning.” He looked at me astonished and asked, “You became a Christian this morning?” I said “No, I’ve been a Christian since sometime in the 80s, but I made the choice to follow Jesus this morning.” He kind of looked at me because I wasn’t giving the right answer to his question, so I continued with something like this:

To follow Jesus isn’t a one time event, even though your denomination says it is. It happens each and every day, moment by moment, and situation by situation. I can be a Christian, but not follow the ways of Jesus as I can scorn my neighbor, not care about the poor, or not pray. I can be a Christian, but not follow Jesus if I all I care about is my own personal salvation and care little for the Earth or the inhabitants within it. I can be a Christian, but not follow Jesus if I pass judgment upon my fellow brothers and sisters. All of that is not following Jesus.

Instead, I choose to follow Jesus daily. I try my best to live with compassion and thoughts of others. I strive for justice and speak out against things like the sin of racism. I focus on helping the poor and those on the margins of society. That is how I choose to follow Jesus.

The man kind of looked at me and said, “you are a clergy person aren’t you?” I asked, “what gave it away?” He said, “you don’t talk like everyone else. Most people say I was saved on such and such a date or weren’t saved. You gave me a sermon.” I looked at him and said, “you caught me, now let me ask you ‘when did you choose to follow Jesus?’” We left each other in peace.
