The Interreg MED Efficient Buildings project
The road so far

Aiming to transfer and capitalise the results of the MED Efficient Buildings Community, in the last six months, the Interreg MED Efficient Buildings project has been actively developing and implementing several activities, including the participation on the 18th European Week of Regions and Cities, the organization of a policy webinar, the launch of a call for city partnerships, a photo contest and the publication of new communication materials.

Efficient public buildings: How will the Renovation Wave bend around the Mediterranean shore?

On October 13th, the MED Efficient Buildings Community organised the online workshop "Efficient public buildings: How will the Renovation Wave bend around the Mediterranean shore?" as part of the 18th European Week of Regions and Cities. In this workshop, EU policymakers heard testimonials from the ground in the Mediterranean area, getting inputs on how to further improve the energy efficiency framework for public buildings at EU and national levels, especially in view of the Renovation Wave initiative.

On December 11th, the Interreg MED Efficient Buildings Community organized the online webinar "Efficient Buildings Strategies: The Renovation Wave seen by national energy agency". On this session, representatives from ADENE (Portugal), ADEME (France), CRES (Greece) and ENEA (Italy) discussed the role of national energy agencies in renovation strategies within the Mediterranean context, with an emphasis on public buildings.  The importance of the articulation between national and local authorities was also highlighted.

                         City Partnerships

The Interreg MED Efficient Buildings project also launched a call for city partnerships between municipalities from the North and the South shores of the Mediterranean to promote know-how and experiences exchange, namely regarding the challenges related to energy transition in the public building sector.

The call is open until January 31st, 2021.

A photo contest was also launched aiming at finding the best pictures that represent the sustainable transition of public buildings in the Mediterranean area.

The contest, which is open to everyone, closes on January 31st, 2021.

New communication materials!

Two new leaflets, one presenting the MED EBC Policy Recommendations and another presenting the EBC pool of outputs, were recently published. A new booklet containing an overview of the work done and the views of the Community was also published.

Interreg MED Modular Project IMPULSE

An interview with Markos Damasiotis,  Head of Development Programs Division at Center For Renewable Energy Sources (Greece)

Within the framework of the new European Green Deal and, in particular, within the Renovation Wave, buildings energy renovation is one of the main subjects to be addressed to reach the 2050 EU targets. The Efficient Buildings Community has been working in this area, for example through the Interreg MED IMPULSE and the Interreg MED STEPPING, having achieved good results. We spoke to Markos Damasiotis, representative of the Interreg MED IMPULSE project, on the results of this project and on how they can contribute to the Renovation Wave initiative.

An interview with Rui Fragoso, Head of Project Department at ADENE – Portuguese Energy Agency and EnR Buildings Working Group Chair

The Renovation Wave initiative is an important contribution to achieve the 2050 EU targets as it can boost the current renovation rate by enabling long-term renovation strategies. . We spoke to Mr. Rui Fragoso, Head of Project Department at ADENE – Portuguese Energy Agency and the European Energy Network (EnR) Buildings Working Group Chair, on his view on the Renovation Wave and how it is expected to impact the National Energy and Climate Plans targets and the implementation of national long-term renovation strategies. EnR is a voluntary network of European energy agencies which aims at promoting sustainable energy good and best practice.

Public buildings are also addressed in the Renovation Wave. We asked Mr. Rui Fragoso how the Renovation Wave can contribute to the improvement of EE levels in public buildings and what concrete instruments could help foster energy renovation at regional and local levels.

The Renovation Wave seen by the MED Efficient Buildings Community

The recommendations published by the MED Efficient Buildings Community last Spring are aligned with the Renovation Wave, namely when it comes to the obligation to renovate public buildings which is directly linked to the main goal of the Community: to promote energy efficiency in public buildings.

In addition to this, the experience of the Community on the ground and the recommendation related to a need to improve the organisational readiness for the evaluation and benchmarking of public buildings performance, which resulted from the lack of data identified by local and regional authorities involved in Modular Projects, are also in line with the Renovation Wave intention to guarantee better information through data collection. Moreover, the Renovation Wave should also increase the availability of funding as well as simplify the rules to its access, as was repeatedly requested by the MED Efficient Buildings Community in its policy recommendations.
