The Quest

May 2018

What's New?

Dear Friends:  Thanks to the many who contributed ideas for what to name this newsletter!  We literally had over 200 from which to choose!  Since a couple of the prize winners are patients, I cannot announce them, but I'm sure they will have fun redeeming their prizes!  I hope you enjoy this and many issues to come.  As always, we appreciate feedback!

New Scheduling System!  The company I used for my scheduling system announced a couple of weeks ago that they were ceasing operations on May 18th - so I had to find a different one.  Thank heavens, because the new company, Acuity, appears to be much simpler, less confusing, and less fraught with glitches!  Check it out!

What's Next?

I am working on a set of core values, which I hope will describe the culture I hope to build at TLC Family Health.  Most likely two will be integrity and ownership - stay tuned!

Calendar - Coming up:

  • May 4, 10, 16, 22, and 28: TLC University group sessions on Sleeping well, Nutrition, Weight Management, Stress, and Staying Active
  • May 12:  Tour, Q&A Session, and SLIM TLC group visit

Condition Corner

Allergic Rhinitis:  AKA "allergies," almost as frustrating as viruses, because so far no one has been able to cure them.  There is a Nobel Prize (and comfortable retirement) awaiting whoever does.  Allergens that are often unavoidable are inhaled through the nose, and the body mistakenly believes they are infectious particles.  It mounts a response worthy of a world war - all with the purpose of ejecting, trapping, destroying, barring entry to, and washing away those particles.  Many treatments are available, including antihistamines, Singulair, and nasal steroid sprays.  Tip:  Precede your nasal steroid spray with a Neilmed nasal saline rinse, and it will be like putting nasal steroids on steroids!  If you are not successful at treating them, let us know!

TLC Tip of the Month

Grab two respectable friends, and create a "TLC Trio!"  You have heard that two heads are better than one, but three easily trumps two!  That third person provides yet one more valuable insight, a backup, and/or a tie-breaker.  Get together to discuss how successful each is doing on the five main Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (Nutrition, Sleeping well, Staying active, Weight management, and Stress management).  Troubleshoot with, support, and learn from each other.  Feel free to reach out to us if you get stuck!

Nutrition Nugget

Plants are both the Holy Grail and the Smoking Gun.  When eaten "whole," they impart great health.  However, when we extract all the nutrition out of them, throw it away, and consume the waste (e.g., high-fructose corn syrup, sugar, oil, white flour, and alcohol), they become the greatest source of addiction and inflammation there is.  Test your courage and see if you can go one single meal without any plant waste.

Practice Pointer

One of the hallmarks of TLC Family Health is a scheduling system that all but eliminates wait times.  Please arrive 10-15 minutes in advance of your appointment so we can get started ON TIME - because the appointment will need to end at or before the designated time!

Recipe of the Month

The Tortizza!

Spread a thin layer of picante sauce on corn tortillas, top with thinly-sliced mushrooms and olives (and other healthful toppings), sprinkle with onion salt and Mrs. Dash Fiesta Lime, and bake at 350 degrees for ~20 minutes. Yummm...
