Farm News

As you could see in last week's newsletter, at times your farmers and crew find time to make some fun. A couple of years ago it would be hard for us to imagine that just 4 full-time workers (your farmers included), in combination with part-time delivery day help can keep this CSA farm going. Most of the people we were able to recruit were simply not up to the task. We can tell you the stories about people walking off the farm, getting lost on their lunch-time drive, etc., etc.

Over the last years however, we've been able to retain a very dedicated and hard working group of people. Richard Brandford and Barryton Henry, both from Jamaica,  have been coming to work at the farm through the H2A program. Although filing their visa petition is a lot of work, we really love working with them - not only are they great people, their experience working at Fox Creek Farm makes the harvesting and planting go easier every time! 

This week we're going to say 'goodbye' to Katie Forti - she's been our steady part-time packing shed help for the past three seasons. Off to SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse ... we're wishing her best of luck with her new adventure!

The weather is keeping us on our toes -- by the end of last week, some of the fields were too wet to get the cultivator tractors in, possibly setting us up for a lot of hand weeding - or maybe not. Let's see what this week's weather brings!

Recipe: Jamaican style carrot juice

While we are at the topic of our Jamaican workers, last weekend we hosted a Jamaican cookout as a farewell dinner for Katie. Richard made carrot juice, Jamaican style. This is the recipe!
 
Ingredients
1 lbs carrots
2.5 cups water
7 oz condensed milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp nutmeg
 
Instructions
Peel and chop carrots into 2 inch pieces. Add to blender with water and blend for about 2 minutes. Place strainer over pitcher and pour mixture into strainer, allowing juice to fall into pitcher and carrot puree to remain in strainer. Discard (or save for another use) carrot puree. Add condensed milk, vanilla extract, and nutmeg to pitcher, stir. Refrigerate before serving.

The winter storage shares are sold out -- thanks! There's still some regular CSA shares available. This week we'll still prorate the share price, but starting next week we'll start adjusting for the fact that the shares are becoming much more bountiful! In this week's share

In every CSA share this week: Carrots, summer squash, and onions. We are rotating kale, green beans, cilantro, lettuce, eggplant, peppers, basil, parsley, red slicer, saladette, and heirloom tomatoes. 

U-Pick update: 

O.K., by the end of the week there will be some cherry tomatoes to pick! We ask you to consider that other CSA members might also be interested in sampling the first Upick tomatoes of the season, so maybe limit your pickings to a pint or two for starters?

Flowers and herbs -- lots of them! Oregano, thyme, chives, parsley, basil, leaf fennel, summer savory, sage, marjoram, chamomile, cilantro, dill, lemon grass and a wide selection of hot peppers.

As a reminder, we just ask you to 'cut to come again', i.e. to take a branch and not the whole plant (so it can regrow), and to harvest with the consideration that the U-pick is shared with all the other CSA members. Thanks!

Upcoming farm events:

We've set the date for the garlic work party. Saturday, September 1st it is. We'll start at 10:00, and stop at the potluck lunch at 12:30, as the garlic is already clipped. We will barter garlic for your help -- this is mostly a sit-down hands-on event, in the barn, in the shade! 
 
And on Friday, September 21: Farm potluck dinner (evening). More details to follow.
