Farm News

The first harvest is on the way! While at one point it looked like the snow would never give way to Spring, our patience got rewarded with some very good growing weather. Almost all crops are looking spectacular - the warm temperatures and the occasional rain really do wonders.

In this new format newsletter, you'll find recipes, a listing of the on-farm events we organize for our CSA members, an invitation to visit your farm (and some of our farm visit rules), our harvest & U-pick news.

Enjoy your share!

Recipe: Beans and Greens

This early in the season, you'll find mostly frost tolerant crops in your share. Eat them raw in a salad, or give this old-time favorite a try: beans and greens.

A meal in itself served with bread or over pasta.
1 T olive oil
1 onion, chopped
1 clove of garlic, mince
Or replace the onion and clove of garlic with a chopped bunch of garlic scallions!
1 Tsp flower
2 cups chicken or vegetable broth, or water
1 lb. or more greens (pac choi, spinach, kale, Swiss chard, etc., or a combination of these)
2 cups cooked beans (cannellini, black-eyed peas, butter, etc.)
1/2 cup grated cheese (optional)
Sauté onion and garlic in oil for about 5 minutes. Add flower to make a roux to thicken the final sauce. Add broth, greens and beans. Simmer until greens are tender and the sauce has thickened. Add salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle with grated cheese if desired. (Serves 4).

A note on GARLIC SCALLIONS: If you are new to our CSA, you may be unfamiliar with garlic scallions. They are immature garlic shoots, which you can use either as scallions with a garlic flavor, or as you would use a clove of garlic (substitute one finely minced garlic scallion for 1-2 cloves).

Upcoming farm events

Mark your calendars! As a member of our CSA, we invite you to come out to the farm anytime - or come for one of our seasonal events. Another benefit to your CSA membership!

Saturday, June 16: New CSA member farm tour (10:00 - 12:00). Meet at the barn at 10:00 for a tour of the farm with your farmers. Bring your questions, and we'll give you the answers! And while you're already at the farm, you might want to consider visiting the Gas Up, an antique engine extravaganza, right here in Gallupville. See Hit-and-miss and steam engines, a dog power, antique tractors and cars - all witin 5 minutes from the farm.

Saturday, July 7: Kids tour of Fox Creek Farm, with bonfire roasted hot-dog & salad lunch (11:00 AM  - 1:30 PM). RSVP for this event required, so we have a count!

Saturday, July 21 or 28: Garlic Harvest Festival (all day)

Saturday, September 1 or 8: Garlic work party (all day)

Friday, September 21: Farm Potluck Dinner (evening)

TBA: gleaning work parties

Come and enjoy your farm for the season ... we hope to see you at one of our events!

Welcome to YOUR farm

Over the winter, we've added some livestock to our farm - S'more and Queen the goats are keeping Tex our Percheron company. And while all farm equipment is still off limits, we restored our 1952 Farmall Cub to climb on and enjoy - it's parked near the U-pick garden!

We invite you to come and visit - the farm is a beautiful place, and you can come anytime. No appointments necessary. But please keep in mind the following:

* Please drive slowly on our farm road as sight lines are limited. Slowing down avoids problems with other CSA members, or collisions with our horse and carriage.
* All our fences are electric. They keep the deer out, and the horse and chickens in. Touching any of these fences really hurts
* You can walk by the fields, but please stay on the grass.
* Children need to be supervised at all times.
* No swimming or wading in the ponds.
* Don’t feed the horse or goats, or enter the pasture.
* Dogs are only allowed on-leash only. Clean-up after your dog.

In this week's share, U-pick update

This week, everyone will receive Spring spinach, mesclun, pac-choi, garlic scallions, and lettuce. We are rotating the first summer squash.

U-Pick update: Historically, the last date for a killing frost in our area is Memorial Day. Last week we finished planting the garden - it will take another month or so before the U-pick will open for harvests.

Family Farm 4-H club fundraiser plant sale. The members of our 4-H club have again grown some outstanding vegetable and ornamental plants for their fundraiser. They will be selling their plants at the first pick-up at the farm, Thursday June 14, 4:00 to 6:00 PM.

Wash your produce! The produce from the farm needs to be washed before consumption. Where needed, we will dunk the produce in our potable well water to remove the field heat (and increase the shelf-life), but by no means do we claim to provide you with produce ready to eat.

Happy to help

Thank you for your support of our farm! We pride ourselves in providing our CSA members with an outstanding experience. Please don't hesitate to contact us with any of your questions or concerns regarding the farm.

If you know of a friend who would like to participate in our CSA, please let them know we still have shares for this season available. Information to sign up is on our website!
