Thanksgiving at Fox Creek Farm

As vegetable producers, Thanksgiving is more than a holiday to spend with friends and family around good food. It's also the time when winter weather sets in, bringing a slow-down to the outdoor farm work.

Thanksgiving gives us some time to reflect upon our accomplishments. To realize that in the blur of the growing season great things happened: this year we fed 375 CSA member families, made substantial deliveries to the SiCM food pantry, and rekindled our collaboration with Capital Roots.

Having time to walk the dog - and seeing that the farm is ready for winter. The cover crops are looking good. Most equipment is parked in the barn and sheds. The place indeed is a "neat little farm".

But most importantly, the seasonal slow-down gives us time to re-energize for the new growing season. To spend more time with family and friends. To improve our farm plans. To think through new ideas.

Yes, we do love Thanksgiving. And we are wishing you a very good Thanksgiving, too!

Your farmers,

Raymond and Sara

The return of the 'End-of-season' questionnaire

The 2022 growing season marks the return of our End-of-season questionnaire. After a hiatus of 3 years, we really want to urge you to provide us with your feedback.

Your comments have helped us shape our CSA program: to bring our attention to produce varieties we never thought of trying to grow, or to point that some of the produce in the share doesn't do it for your household.

It's Community Supported Agriculture, after all: let us know what your think about our CSA by completing the SHORT questionnaire online. The link is below:

A note on our Healthy Food for All Fund

In 2015, we started our Healthy Food for All Fund with the objective to reduce financial barriers to participate in the CSA. Initially, we organized a subsidized CSA pick-up site at Yates Village in Schenectady. For various reasons, that rather ambitious project was not successful: we learned quickly that there is a lot more to resolving the issue of so-called Food deserts than making fresh produce affordable and accessible.

Forward to 2022, and the Healthy Food for All fund continues to successfully increase accessibility of Fox Creek Farm's exceptional produce. This year, the fund made two full shares at highly reduced cost available to the Free Food Fridge Albany project, bringing our produce to underserved Albany neighborhoods. Thank you to Rebecca for bringing this project to our attention, and for taking the time to stock the fridges! For more information about the Free Food Fridge Albany project, visit https://freefoodfridgealbany.com/

The Healthy Food for All Fund also helped offsetting the costs of the share for 3 CSA members who expressed financial hardship. We usually ask them to contribute what they can - and the fund picks up the rest of the tab. All it takes is a call or email, and we work something out.

The 2015 Yates Village project was a collaboration with SiCM, Schenectady Inner City Ministry. Our collaboration evolved in providing produce for their food pantry on Albany Street, and the Healthy Food for All fund helps offset some of the costs associated with those produce deliveries.
