Farm News

With the wonderful weather of the last week, it is easy to forget about the very wet spring. Rain, rain, rain. Fortunately, we were able to pull together and plant at every dry-ish opportunity we had, hence the abundance of produce we are harvesting right now.

But there are some crops that did not fare well with the spring weather. Most noticeably, our melons. The little melon plants "caught a cold" when they transferred from the greenhouse to the field. And that made the plants susceptible to Phytophthora root rot. So our extensive melon planting looked very nice when just out in the field, but a lot of the plants simply didn't grow (and died). We were early enough in the season to try a replant, but for one reason or the other, also a lot of the replants didn't fare well. That's also farming.

That shows the importance of crop diversity on small farms like ours. Were we a melon farm, we would have been in big trouble. But as CSA farmers, we grow over 50 different vegetables - most of which are doing very well. 

So get ready for yet another wonderful CSA share!

Recipe: Roasted carrots with garlic

This recipe leaves the carrots whole – you may want to select some of about the same size so there’s no problem with the cooking time. This recipe serves 4 as a side dish.

Ingredients:

About 1 pound medium carrots, peeled
¼ cup of water
4 cloves of garlic
1 Tbsp of canola oil
1 Tbsp of unsalted butter
Salt and freshly ground pepper

Directions: Preheat the oven to 400°. In a medium baking dish, combine carrots with the water, garlic, oil and butter and season with salt and pepper. Cover with foil and roast for 30 minutes, or until tender. Uncover and roast for about 30 minutes longer, until the water is gone, and the carrots are lightly browned in spots. Transfer the carrots and garlic to a plate and serve.
 

In this week's share & U-pick update

This week's share:  Nantes carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, and garlic. In rotation we have sweet corn, summer squash, eggplant, peppers, cucumber, cilantro, basil, Swiss chard, and kale.

And the U-Pick is still looking beautiful! This week, besides the earlier announced culinary herbs and flowers, there is also a wide variety of cherry tomatoes and (for the first time) tomatillos available for harvest.

Really, if you have a chance to make the track out to the farm, you'll not be disappointed!
