2. CEC Conversation on Health Disparities: LGBTQ+ Panel

The Community Engaged Care Program invites students, faculty, and staff at all UTHSC campuses to join us on Wednesday, February 3, at 6:00 pm, for a virtual discussion about how the social determinants of health relate to the LGBTQ+ community. Sex, gender, and identity play an important role in health outcomes and can determine a person’s access to resources, including education, food, housing, and medical care. This panel will explore sex- and gender-related causes of illness and inequality and propose ways that healthcare providers can make a difference. Our panelists include Stephanie Bell (Director of the Metamorphosis Project for Youth Emergency Services at OUTMemphis: The LGBTQ Center for the Mid-South), Kayla Rena Gore (Co-Founder, My Sistah’s House, a nonprofit that assists the trans community), and Dr. Crystal Walker (Assistant Professor – UTHSC College of Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner – Regional One Health ). RSVP to this virtual event via Engage for Zoom information.

This Conversation on Health Disparities will count toward the Social Determinants of Health Certificate. You can view past Conversations on Health Disparities on the UTHSC Community Engaged Care Mediasite Channel.

4. National Stalking Awareness Month: Stalking and Sexual Assault

Both stalking and sexual assault can cause victims to experience trauma symptoms. They can experience changes in their sleep patterns, appetite, or routine. They may experience increased anxiety or feel like they have to be hyperaware of their surroundings when in public. They might have flashbacks, nightmares, or persistent unwanted thoughts. They may also experience a variety of physical symptoms, like headaches, general aches, and pains, feelings of weakness or numbness, or changes in weight.

One of the most important connections to recognize between stalking and sexual assault is how misconceptions about both of these topics make them harder to address. Common myths about these crimes stop people from believing that these crimes happen at the rate they occur, prevent people from reporting these crimes to law enforcement, and impede the overall criminal justice processLearning the facts about stalking and sexual assault is an opportunity for us to speak up against what’s misunderstood and work towards finding better solutions.  – adapted from theheartsofhope.org

5. Submit a Selfie to Support National Wear Red Day

UTHSC typically recognizes National Wear Red Day each year with the campus wearing red for a group photo to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease in women. Although we are still not able to gather in a group for a photo this year, we want to participate in this year's National Wear Red Day, Friday, February 5.

All faculty, staff, and students can help support National Wear Red Day:

  • Take a selfie wearing red – a shirt, jacket, scarf, earrings, boa, glasses, hat, and/or anything else red!
  • Email your "red selfie" to communications@uthsc.edu by Wednesday, February 3
  • Share the 2021 campus photo – a "red selfie" grid – from UTHSC's social media channels on Friday, February 5
The three most creative selfies will be awarded a Starbucks gift card courtesy of the Office of Equity and Diversity! So, pull out your red, snap those selfies, and send them our way!
