What a Great Team!

The Best of Friends Gift Shop closed its doors in November 2022 after 17 years of successful operation.

Susan Fraser served as the manager of Best of Friends during its first decade and Kathy Blight assumed the position in 2015.

In 2018 in the Best of Friends Gift Shop, Kathy Blight (left) presents a cheque for $22,000 to Theresa Lomas, the Library’s liaison to the Friends’ Board.

The shop generated revenue for the many important projects supported by Friends of the Winnipeg Public Library like the Family Literacy Playgrounds, sewing machines for the IDEA MILL, the Writer-in-Residence Program and special children's reading stools.

In this issue of NOTES, we want to recognize those who gave of their time and expertise to The Best of Friends Gift Shop. Their commitment and dedication were exceptional. They made shopping at Best of Friends an enjoyable experience that kept our customers coming back.

Volunteers Susan Fraser and Maureen Taunton began planning for the opening of the shop in 2002. It was their tireless commitment that ensured the shop would become a reality in 2005. Susan served for many years as the Gift Shop Manager and Buyer while Maureen took on a long-term role as Treasurer of Friends of the Winnipeg Public Library. Thank you, Susan and Maureen.

When Susan retired Janet Carriere assumed the position of Gift Shop Buyer and her expertise in recognizing the kind of merchandise that appealed to customers was of such benefit to the shop. Thank you, Janet.

Pam Goundry was a shop staff member for a decade and we are so grateful for her service.

In recognition of the Shop, its volunteers and its customers, a special item or project for the Winnipeg Public Library will be funded from the Best of Friends Gift Shop proceeds.

                                              Kathy Blight- Gift Shop Manager

I am very grateful to have been part of the great team of volunteers who always looked forward to their shifts in the shop and believed in the importance of libraries in our communities. Many volunteers have remarked on how much fun they had working in the shop. The following quote describes Best of Friends volunteers perfectly.

"The broadest and maybe the most meaningful definition of volunteering is.... Doing more than you have to, because you want to, in a cause you consider good"  - Ivan Scheier

Lori Bekolay has announced her resignation from our Board of Directors. We have appreciated Lori's dedicated service on our board since August of 2016.   Lori was responsible for the Friends' social media presence ably handling our Instagram and Facebook accounts.

She also acted as the photographer for the merchandise in the Best of Friends Gift Shop and worked together with Chelsea McKee-Trenchard to create bookmarks advertising our organization.  It was Lori who spearheaded and organized our successful Coal & Canary candle fundraiser.  We want to thank Lori for all her efforts on behalf of Friends of the Winnipeg Public Library.
