Welcome to Climate 50 | Introduction
We are excited to have finally revealed the Climate 50 list on the 15th of January - the most up-to-date, comprehensive, and insightful annual global climate VC ranking.

We held a live launch event and sat down with Sifted and PVcase to discuss why VC investors should take climate change seriously. You can learn more about the initiative on Medium or watch the fireside chat interview moderated by Connor Bolboe from Sifted.

With the methodology being accessible on Github, the ranking was built with the aim of transparency. It has a complete view of global climate VC funds, considering Direct and Indirect criteria that we believe shapes and defines a great climate investor.

Lastly, we did not forget you — the climate community. We seek to spark a debate, not have the final say. We invite you to vote for your climate leaders until the 28th of February, which will contribute 10% towards the final investor ranking.

In short, our master plan consists of three key steps:
  1. To build a respected 360-view global climate VC ranking
  2. To publish an in-depth annual report on VC investments in the climate sector
  3. To gather Climate 50 leaders to an annual event dedicated to foster discussion and collaboration
For us at Contrarian Ventures, launching Climate 50 is not simply another ranking or tap on the investor’s shoulders. We are currently looking for partners who would join us to raise awareness around climate change and help inspire more investors to join the climate fight!

  Current Climate 50 leaders

Since we revealed the list two weeks ago, we have received unconditional climate community support yielding more than 1,300 casted votes for all the investors on the list. Moreover, throughout the two-week period, we have received more than 20 new investor nominations, currently having 145+ investors onboard.

To have a deeper understanding of climate investors' landscape, investors are split into 3 different types:
  1. Early stage - Investors focusing from pre-seed to Series A. Currently led by:
    1. Aster - French VC fund which has invested in Uber and focuses on energy mobility and cleantech industries
  2. Growth - Investors focusing on rounds beyond Series A. Currently led by:
    1. Khosla Ventures - US-based VC fund which has invested in DoorDash and focuses on energy, mobility, sustainability, cleantech and other industries
  3. Corporate - Corporate investors focusing on sustainable transition investments directly, and not through FoF strategy. Currently led by:
    1. Next47 - German CVC fund which has invested in Sila Nanotechnologies and focuses on AI, mobility and robotics
Early stage climate investors take the biggest part in the list, currently representing nearly 50% of total investors in the list, followed by Growth and Corporate climate investors representing the remaining 50% nominees
However, if we would focus on geography, the disparity among the North American, European and other geographies investors rises dramatically. North America alone represents 62% of total climate investors and has almost twice as many climate investors as 4 other regions combined.
