IHF SUPPORTS CONTINUING  EDUCATION

APRIL UPDATE

Dear volunteers and supporters of IHF,

The young people we serve have experienced more tragedy and hardship than most will ever experience in a lifetime. However, through it all, these intelligent, inquisitive, and resilient young people are somehow inspired to have big hopes and dreams for their futures. They inspire us every day with every action and achievement.

We currently have fourteen students enrolled in our University Program, ten of them still waiting for a sponsor to help them create change. If you would like to know more about them you can click the link below.

Thank you for your ongoing support!

BALI'S IHF OLYMPICS

IHF Olympics
This month our volunteers, Elisa and Pete, organized a big special acitivity: “IHF Olympics”. They explained to our children what the Olympics are and organized for them some challenges, such as Frisbee Throw, Sack Race, Long Jump, Eating Contest, Wheel Barrow Race, Egg&Spoon Race and 60 meters Dash. Our children were really involved in the activities. They liked to face this challenges and try their best and win one of the Medals. Every children represented a country with its flag and its national anthem, and at the end of the day, they all had a snack together to celebrate the end of the Olympics!

Next week Pete and Elisa will start the first Football Session of our IHF Football Team and we will start also a new class: Music Class with another volunteer!

On another note, thanks to our new computer classes and our Local Director Assep, who has been helping us a lot with community work and activities this month, almost 20 new children joined our Bali Center! Step by step we will achieve our goals, always smiling!

NAKURU'S BLESSINGS

Nakuru receives gifts
At the IHF Nakuru Center, the children have had a week of being showered with gifts and interacting with new people. On Tuesday, the center's co-director joined the family and brought with her gifts for the children. The most popular of the lot was the roller skates, which the boys were quick to pick up and learn. They turned out to be very adept and quick to learn. On Friday, one of the center's previous co-directors sent gifts for the children all the way from Mozambique. Kamama received a Braille book which she was very excited to receive and was excited to tell us that it was a storybook that she really enjoyed. For the other children at the center, we played a variety of obstacle games where the four winners received sunglasses. On Saturday, was the icing on the cake. The youth group from the Holy Cross church paid the children's a visit and brought food and clothes. They played games and had activities with the children and even cooked rice, chapati and green grams for everyone. It has truly been a memorable week for all the children as they prepare to go back to school for their second term.

MEDAN IS HELPING BUILD CONFIDENCE

Local Volunteers with David and Salli
This month was very special for the Medan Center because Salli and David arrived to volunteer from Australia. They work for organisations who actively support their employees to participate in Volunteering activities. David works for Salesforce, a global software company whose mission focuses on the importance of giving back to the community.  Salli works for KPMG Australia, and now they are here to help the children. Salli described the centre as a "group of extremely dedicated teachers who willingly give their time to provide a safe environment for the children to learn and to play. It is lovely to watch the students participate in class and see how much importance is placed on building the students confidence".

Aflatoun is one our programes at IHF Medan besides dancing class and making handicrafts. With various games and other learning centered activities, the students can build up confidence, and obtain social and financial knowledge. This month, our students worked diligently through every activity and were very interactive as they completed their tasks.

BONDING IN JAKARTA

Teaching Training
The IHF Jakarta Center has more than three hundred students who are eager to learn the basic knowledge offered by IHF. From March to April, IHF Jakarta has held class activities such as playing angklung and reusing plastic glasses by painting them as vases. Angklung as a traditional bamboo instrument from West Java has been so mesmerising for the students that they kept asking when another session will be conducted.

Another teaching training session was held by Sampoerna University cooperating with their alumni who became math and English teachers at some of the top schools in Jakarta. The training was conducted in three hours. Sampoerna University has also been involved with IHF Jakarta by sending their students as volunteers to teach our children as part of their community service. To close the session, the local volunteers decided to have a one-day trip to Kebon Raya Bogor after spending the night at the center and, of course, cooking and dining together.  They had a lot of fun!

Student of the Month

KELVIN

Volunteer of the Month

KAK FIKA
Kelvin

Kelvin, 15, lives in our Kenya Center in Nakuru. One week there was a day off at school, and while the others decided to chit-chat, Kelvin took a seat and started to study. He said: "I want to be an engineer so I can make inventions, like airplanes that can go fast."
Urban Farming

Kak Fika, who is always concerned about getting fresher air, introduced IHF Jakarta's new regular activity: Urban Farming! Half of the volunteers, most of whom are not really familiar with farming and gardening, joined the first Urban Farming. Thank you Fika!
