COLLECT FOR THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY
GRANT, O Lord, we beseech thee, that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by thy governance, that thy Church may joyfully serve thee in all godly quietness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

READINGS: 1 St. Peter 3.8 and St. Luke 5.1
Curate’s Corner

Lord, how can man preach thy eternal word?
         He is brittle crazy glass:
Yet in thy temple thou dost him afford
         This glorious and transcendent place,
To be a window, through thy grace.
                                     – From The Windows by George Herbert

From St. Olave's fishers of men window

“Brittle crazy glass.” I imagine Simon must have felt something like this after he took in that miraculously huge haul of fish, and fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man.” How could he, a fragile and sinful man, possibly know what to do with this abundance?

But the abundance of God’s grace doesn’t end with the gifts we’re given. If God gives us gifts, it’s so that we can use these gifts to show others how great God is. Simon (later named Peter) will go on to show countless others how they too have a place in the story of salvation.

God gives it to all of us to be windows, brittle crazy glass that we are. Which, when you think about it, is even more amazing than a boatload of fish!

Join us this Sunday for Holy Communion at 8:30 and Morning Prayer at 10:30.
