Dear Junior Church families,

It’s hard to believe that it has already been five weeks since I started teaching Junior Church at St Olave’s! It has been a pleasure getting to know your children –learning, playing and praying with them. So far we have had lessons on the Parable of the Good Samaritan, the healing miracles of Jesus, the hierarchy of angels and prayer, all while going over the basics of the Bible. They are a truly energetic group of bright and curious learners.

One of my goals for Junior Church is to help the children grow in their Christian faith by rooting it in a strong prayer life. Many of the activities and crafts that we have been doing are designed to help them learn to pray. I can’t do this without your help! Prayer is a discipline and it takes lots of encouragement to build up good habits.

Junior Church at Home
When I first came to St Olave’s some parents asked me to come up with ways they could continue their children’s faith formation at home. In response to this I have created catechism work books to help them learn the core basics of our Anglican faith. Right now they are focused on learning and understanding the Apostles’ Creed. Each week they are given a new activity page focused on one section of the Creed. Please help your child(ren) complete each week’s assignment and remind them to bring it to church every week.

Volunteers required
Junior Church attendance has been quite high since the beginning of September – this is excellent! However, that means we are in need of an extra set of hands on Sunday mornings. We have been blessed by the presence of Armita, a youth helper who is wonderful with the kids, but we need others to help out on occasion so that she has a chance to attend church services too. I would like to create a schedule of parent volunteers as soon as possible. Please let me know if you are interested in helping out occasionally. And if you’re not, there are other ways to support this ministry.

November 3 Lunch Meeting
I would like to invite families connected with Junior Church to attend a lunch, after church, on November 3 to discuss our vision for the programme and to share ideas. Please email me at to let me know if you are able to attend. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you having any other questions.

This Sunday, children are invited to bring harvest fruits or vegetables or non-perishable items to be donated to a local food bank. There are lots of other exciting things coming up including the Nativity Play (see important dates here). I am looking forward to seeing you all soon and to many more exciting weeks of Junior Church!
