WINTER WONDERLAND 2018
The annual Christmas Showcase, Winter Wonderland took place on Wednesday the 12th of December.  This year’s show was a little different because the winners of the NGHS Talent Contest were included in the line up. There were fabulous performances from Violinists, Drummers, Vocalists, Pianists, and no to forget the Soul Band Juniors, Choir, and the Soul Band.  The Soul Band took the opportunity at the end of the show to thank Music Teacher Mr Challinor for all his hard work, patience and support with endless rehearsals, tours and performances, and to wish him well in his new school.  This will be Mr Challinor’s last ever show with us, he will be very much missed not just in the Music Department by the Musicians who are passionate about the subject but by all the NGHS staff.  We wish him the best of luck.  Thank you to everyone who came to support the EPA faculty and the talented and hard working students who performed. Read the full story on our website and check the EPA blog and twitter for more updates.
BEHIND THE SCENES AT MANCHESTER MUSEUM

Year 10 Photography students went behind the scenes at Manchester Museum on a specially organised visit to the Entomology department.  Phil, who manages the department and has worked there for 44 years, introduced rare specimens of butterflies and moths, some which are over 100 years old and species which are now extinct!  Students photographed the specimens with a specialist macro lens and the results will be included in the ongoing Lottery funded project because there is a unique link with war.  During war time, injured and traumatised soldiers took part in crafts as part of their rehabilitation, the most popular craft was embroidering butterflies.  Student Jasleen said, “It was really fun to go into the store where nobody gets to go and the butterflies were amazing!”
View the latest EPA Newsletter here, for all of the more recent stories from the EPA faculty.  You can also follow the Art and Photography department on twitter.

'Take 10' over the Christmas break and read for 10 minutes a day.  Students have a reading book which they can continue reading over Christmas.  Year 7 and 8 have been specially given a new book in the last week of term which they can enjoy over the holiday.  Read more about our Take 10 reading campaign and it's benefits here.
STEM ACTIVITY WITH THE ARMY
Students in Year 8 worked with Army to create car rockets which they raced out on the astro.  The students worked in groups and had to design a rocket which would be streamlined enough to gain the speed required to beat the other teams.  The winning team got up to 46mph!
CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS FUNDRAISER
The end of term has arrived and it's time for the annual Santa's Singalong to celebrate all the hard work that has been done this term.  This year however, we are celebrating whilst also raising money for Parkinson's UK Timperley and Trafford Group in support of staff member Margaret Risk who suffers from Parkinson's disease.  We are having and own clothes day/Christmas Jumper day, a cake sale, and finally Santa's Singalong where staff and student's can choose to dress up in festive fancy dress and donate £1 to the cause.  We will share the final amount raised in the next issue.
