It is crucial that students maintain good attendance levels as we approach the Christmas holidays.  We are running an inter form attendance competition, the form with the best attendance each week will win a prize.  We thank parents and carers for their support at such an important time of the academic year.

If you have changed your telephone number, postal address or email address, please contact the school so we can update your details on our system.  If you're unsure, simply telephone reception and we will be happy to check for you.

On Monday 19th of November Mike Kane MP officially opened our ancient Egyptian Shabti exhibition. We have been specially chosen to be in partnership with the Manchester Museum and as part of this, we are a pilot school for the 'Shabti in Schools' project, hosting an ancient Egyptian artefact and delivering an exclusive learning programme using the Museum and it's unique resources to NGHS students and the wider community.

The Year 8 Art Committee created the 'Nile News' for the opening and are already working on the next issue.  Mike Kane was able to discuss with the students, our community and our partnership with the Manchester Museum,

"What a privilege to have this Shabti in Wythenshawe!"

We have been taking part in the ‘Take 10’ initiative with Manchester City Council.  Students are encouraged to read for 10 minutes a day.  This helps with literacy but also helps support good mental health and wellbeing.  This is something we encourage parents to continue at home.

In school all students are expected to have a reading book with them as part of equipment and have been given reading record booklets to track their own reading progress. They have to collect 12 signatures for things like using the library well, reading aloud confidently, completing a book and a reading record entry etc. Once complete, they can then exchange for rewards in the Library, this progresses up to Platinum Level. The idea is to keep the reading for pleasure momentum going. In Feb and July, we’ll have a prize draw for students who have been taking part. Period 7 lessons have been starting with ‘Take10’ – reading for 10 minutes.

The Art and Design and Photography department successfully big for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to create the Wythenshawe Poppy Walk up the lead up to Armistice Day.  Students were able to go on a trip to Media City to photograph the poppy wave, grew poppies in our roof garden and created a number of displays using photography, mixed media, and textiles.  Local primary school students created photo montages at open evening, and the winning entry won a prize of a PS4 from Learning Unlimited, and had their work included in the final exhibition.  100 poppies were displayed around the school by the Art Committee and the project continues throughout the term.  You can keep up to date with the latest on this project by following the art department on twitter @NGHS_ART.  Mr. Chadwick also took two Year 9 students to France to take part in our national Remembrance service, the students were able to lay a wreath on Wilfred Owen's grave.

This November students from Year 9, 10, and 11 have started working with expert trainers from the education charity Talk The Talk.

Talk The Talk’s mission is to improve students’ communication skills to enable positive interaction in all life situations.
