Building on the wealth of experience of the School-plus-Home Garden Project (S+HGP), a banner program of the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), the School-plus-Home Garden cum Biodiversity Enhancement Enterprise (SHGBEE) centers on ‘BioAgversity,’ or the synergy of food and nutrition security, sustainable agriculture, and biodiversity.

With this background, SEARCA in close collaboration with the Regalo ng Kilit Foundation is convening the First International Conference on School plus Home Garden cum Biodiversity Enhancement Enterprise (SHGBEE1) on 8-12 November 2022 in Coron, Palawan. The Conference aims to provide a platform for sharing of experiences and best practices related to school and home gardens and its contributions to biodiversity enhancement in the Southeast Asian region.

Sustainable rice project lifts incomes of smallholder farmers in Thailand

The Market Oriented Smallholder Value Chain (MSVC) programme, one of the largest sustainable rice projects in Thailand, is close to completion and has successfully helped 19,000 Thai smallholder farmers increase their net income by more than 20% and reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from farming by 21%. The Umbrella Program on Food and Nutrition Security for Southeast Asia is envisaged to serve as a platform for collaborative research on food security among the University Consortium members and partner universities/institutions from the other Southeast Asian Ministries of Education Organization (SEAMEO) member countries. It aims to align the program of work on food security of SEARCA and the University Consortium to the development needs in the region and to support ongoing ASEAN-level programs on improving food security. The priority areas of collaboration shall be addressed through three integrated components: research and development, capacity building through graduate education and training, and knowledge management.
