Family Movie Night

From the Principal
Welcome to the 2019 school year at Yarra Primary School. It’s been wonderful to see the students so excited to be back at school and ready to learn! I have already heard many stories of exciting adventures and precious time spent with family. I visited Uluru with my family and was in awe of the land and learning about the culture of the traditional owners of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, the Yankunytjatjara and Pitjantjatjara people. I would recommend, however, that you visit at a different time of the year as the 47 degrees days were stifling!
We have a number of new staff at Yarra this year: Josiah Conner teaching Year 1/2, Yasmin Vachha and Jacob Bryant teaching in 3/4. We also welcome Joanne Watson to the education support team. Toward the end of last year, Michelle Phillips joined the staff with the mammoth task of bringing back the library to its former glory. We look forward to relaunching the library with a renewed borrowing system and lunchtime club mid-term. In coming newsletters we will include brief biographies from our new staff. Newsletters will be fortnightly this year and the first will be published on Friday 15 February.
We have a new lunch order provider in 2019 (see flyer attached to this letter). Classroom Cuisine will be available from Monday 4 February and will deliver to Yarra Primary School every day excepting Tuesdays. You will need to register an account via their website. Go to:
Please note we no longer run Miss Peppercorns on Fridays. We advise that you close your Flexi school account with them.

During the summer break we had a team of parent volunteers water our kitchen garden. Thanks to the Chin, Palmer Mudd, Harrison, Hughes and Fletcher families for keeping the garden hydrated during a very hot January. You may have also observed the long awaited pizza oven has been installed. There is still some work to be done getting it operational and Kieran our ‘Kitchen Gardener’ is working determinedly so we can enjoy wood-fired pizzas soon! On the topic of 'long awaited', the student toilets are finally completed. The students have commented how much better they are and Valetta and I can attest that lock up is a less smelly experience! Thanks to School Council for their support and the students for their patience with this well overdue building work.
Our Prep students have settled in very well this week and I acknowledge the efforts of families, Year 6 Buddies and our amazing teachers in supporting the Preps in this big transition to school. Upcoming events include the Family Movie Night on Friday 15 February (see flyer attached to this letter). This is a big family fundraiser event at the school and I encourage all families (and their extended family as well as friends) to attend to support our students and the dedicated parent volunteers that organise such events. To get your tickets go to: www.trybooking.com/ZYLZ On Monday 18 February at 5.30pm in the multipurpose room we will run an information session for all new parents to the school from Years P-6. This session will focus on Compass, YOSH, processes for excursions and parent payments and other administrative processes. Please note this session is designed for all new parents to the school across all year levels.
On Friday March 1 we will host our PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT for all families across the school. This night focusses on student learning, curriculum and assessment. The Junior School (P-2) session
will run from 5.30-6.00pm and Senior School from 6.00-6.30pm. Following this the whole school community is invited to bring their own dinner (you may choose to use BBQ) and share in a whole school twilight picnic dinner in the school grounds. Please note children will be supervised by Yarra staff in the yard during the 2 sessions. In the meantime if you have any particular information you wish to share with your child’s teacher please make a mutually convenient time to meet. We have an open door policy at Yarra and please know you can make times throughout the year with your child’s teacher to discuss issues, ask questions, get or give feedback, report problems, or share ideas. Congratulations on a great start to the year,
