Feeding the Hungry One Sole At a Time
The Shoe Away Hunger Program

Dear Friends,

Providing individuals and families with food is critically important, but so is having quality shoes, especially in Minnesota.

Our Shoe Away Hunger Program offers affordable quality footwear for those in need.  In addition, it helps us to raise important funds to continue feeding over 7,500 people each month through our 30+ food program sites.  This amazing program offers a simple and meaningful way for you to join with us as we work together to eliminate local hunger “one sole at a time”.

One of our happy shoppers recently shared that during COVID, she was not able to get good shoes for her kids or herself. At a recent shoe event, she started jumping up and down when she found shoes for her family exclaiming, “The shoe bus is back! The shoe bus is back!! Everyone needs to come to this shoe program because they have the best shoes!!”

Jamie Morrison, Director of Operations/Human Resources shared, “More and more food sites are calling to have the Shoe Away Hunger trailer or our shoe bus at their sites. Many people need quality footwear in addition to food to help make their budgets stretch and to provide for their families. With the Spring/Summer season coming, the need for quality warm-weather footwear will be in high demand. We want EVERYONE to have the opportunity to find shoes that will protect their feet and to have shoes that they love!”

With a suggested donation of $5 per pair for adult shoes and $2 per pair for children’s shoes we can provide quality footwear at affordable prices and raise extra dollars for our hunger relief programs.

You can help provide shoes and food for those in need! Here are a few ways you can get involved:

  1. Give financial support towards the program
  2. Donate gently used or new shoes and boots
  3. Host a shoe drive or a “clean out your closet for a cause” event
  4. Sponsor a shoe event and help us bring affordable footwear to schools, shelters, and all those in need
  5. Volunteer at an event or at our Shoe Away Hunger warehouse
I invite you to learn more about this important program and the impact it is making on our local communities by watching the video below and visiting our website here.

800 West Broadway Food Shelf In-A-Box & Shoe Away Hunger

Leona Martin, Food Shelf In-A-Box Site Leader at our 800 West Broadway, Minneapolis MN site

The Food Shelf In-A-Box at 800 West Broadway offers monthly food distributions to more than 200 individuals and approximately 100 families each month. All throughout COVID and the winter months, this dedicated team has continued to serve the North Minneapolis community with food, shoes, warm winter wear, emergency food packs for the unsheltered, and other basic needs – all with kindness and dignity exemplified by Leona, Sandra Brick, and a wonderful team of volunteers.

We recently had an opportunity to speak with Leona who shared, “We have had this partnership with Good in the ‘Hood for about 5 years and we have been so excited to serve the community with food and shoes. Prior to COVID, the Shoe Bus would come and that was so great because people could go on the bus and pick out their own shoes. Not only were we able to provide shoes, but the people who work in our building were able to collect and donate shoes too, so it was full circle -- the community was so blessed. Especially with the children’s shoes, who grow out of them so quickly. Just to see the smiles on their faces and the excitement, it’s just really a great concept for the community.

We’ve had to discontinue shoe events during COVID as we moved to a drive-up food distribution model, but I will be glad to get back to the days very soon when we can have people shop with dignity for themselves and select what they want, including shoes again.

I want to say that I am grateful for the partnership with Good in the ‘Hood, and it is a true partnership. Good in the ‘Hood is the backbone of our program, and I just appreciate it so much. “

Shoe Away Hunger Sponsor Schuler Shoes
We can’t say enough about our generous Shoe Away Hunger partner and sponsor, Schuler Shoes.  The dedication and commitment Schuler Shoes has for quality footwear and for foot health is impressive.  They have shown consistent and strong support for our organization in our efforts to deliver shoes, socks, medical foot care, and food to our local community with a particular emphasis upon the children.  We’re truly grateful for our caring friends and partners at Schuler Shoes who have a long history of generously giving back to our local community! You can donate shoes at any of the nine Schuler Shoes locations or contact us for drop off opportunities.

MN FoodShare | There is Still Time to Help

The MN FoodShare Campaign is still going strong and there is still time to help restock our shelves!

Each year in March and early April, we participate in the MN FoodShare Campaign to restock our shelves to serve the community. So far, we’ve raised nearly $40,000 of our $50,000 goal, and almost 9,000 lbs of food! Thank you!

You can support this effort by donating cash or food through April 10th and your gift will be partially matched by MN FoodShare.

The easiest and most effective way to restock our food programs is by donating dollars. That’s because purchasing groceries through our local food banks enables us to stretch each dollar a whole lot further than typical purchases made through a retail grocery store.

Please contact Jamie Morrison, Director of Operations/HR at jamie@goodinthehood.org or 612-440-7463 if you are interested in donating food and helping us meet this important need

Thank you for making a difference! Together we are better!

THANK YOU to all our generous
Sponsors and Donors!

We could not help our neighbors in need without your kind support.
We are truly grateful.
