The Good in the ‘Hood SoleCare for Souls Program

Dear Friends,

A program of Good in the ‘Hood, SoleCare for Souls is a valuable medical outreach that promotes health through free medical foot care, kindness, and the provision of critical services to over 2,000 unsheltered and hurting people every year.
During the hands-on work of cleaning, trimming, and filing, SoleCare volunteers and staff listen to the men and women who entrust their feet to our care. With dignity and respect, we tend to their outer “soles” while we nourish their inner “souls” with friendship, encouragement and kindness bringing much needed hope to those surviving without a safe home, or under-resourced to properly care for their foot health needs.

Recently, we spoke to one of the souls served by this program. We asked him how he felt after receiving medical footcare through this important program.
“Oh my gosh. Euphoric. It is extremely therapeutic, not only in the footcare actions taken but when I walk out of here, I literally walk out on clouds.  It’s more than just somebody shaving and reshaping my feet. These practitioners, who work with SoleCare are truly giving of themselves and I know this is not anything involving money, it’s a calling.” R--
Currently, SoleCare offers services throughout the week in four locations – Minneapolis, Bloomington, St. Paul and St. Cloud. We are thrilled to announce that we recently received $100,000 gift from the Eagle Brook Church Woodbury Campus Make a Difference Campaign that will be used in part to purchase a truck and retrofitted trailer for our SoleCare ministry to go mobile.
We are so grateful for this opportunity and the many more soles and souls we will be able to reach! Thank you, EBC Woodbury!
Volunteers are the heartbeat of this program. Please visit our website to learn more about SoleCare and how you can get involved.
Be sure to Save the date for our 13th Annual SoleCare for Souls Fundraiser on Sunday, September 25th! More information coming soon!
Thank you for reading and for your kind support.

Volunteer Spotlight

Meet Karen, one of our dedicated SoleCare for Souls volunteers at the Cedar Valley Church site.

“I’ve been an assistant with Sole Care for Souls for many years, mostly at Cedar Valley Church. A lot of these clients we see have long hours on their feet. They’re working a warehouse job or a food service job. And sometimes they’ll come in with their uniform on right after work trying to get in while it’s open. It just enables them to continue their livelihood as they’re trying to make ends meet. To be able to have this free service when they would probably not be able to afford to pay out of pocket for it, or maybe it’s not covered by insurance. It enables them to get ahead and keep striving forward. When their feet are cared for, they can keep going. It’s like that boost to do another 12 hours on their feet. It’s really nice to know that help is there for them, and it benefits their lives as they’re trying to just make ends meet or move forward.”
Thank you for all that you do for soles and souls, Karen!!

A Heartfelt Goodbye & Warm Welcome
With sadness, we say good-bye to our very dear friend, Reverend David Glasser. David has been a model of outstanding service in his 5 years with Good in the ‘Hood. He has served in several very important capacities, including his most recent role as a Program Supervisor.

He is known for his kindness and relational warmth as he consistently puts the interests and needs of others before his own. He is truly a model of the culture we strive towards with Good in the ‘Hood. David will continue to be our dear friend; however, he will be missed by all of us who have enjoyed the privilege to work side by side with him on a regular basis.  We wish David the very best as he begins an exciting new season of ministry serving as a chaplain at a local senior center.  Thank you, David, for making a significant difference in all of our lives!
New Members to our Board of Directors
We're thrilled to share that Kathy Jo Bissen, Founder and Retired Director of our SoleCare for Souls program has agreed to rejoin our team as a member of our board of directors.  Not only will Kathy serve as a member of our board of directors, but she will also continue offering onsite volunteer leadership to strengthen our medical foot care outreach and services.

In addition, we are very pleased to share that Leona Martin has accepted our invitation to become a member of our board of directors. Leona has worked with the State Government for several years with a specific focus on job services for at-risk youth.  She serves as the volunteer onsite coordinator for our pop-up program, Food Shelf In-A-Box at 800 West Broadway.

We're very grateful to have Kathy and Leona serve as members of our board of directors and we're much better because of their support.
