  • Mali faced weeks of anti-government protests over corruption and the worsening economics last August, which led to the creation of the interim government, but the slow pace of change since has caused recent tension


GOP leaders condemn Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene over Holocaust remarks

  • On Tuesday, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy condemned GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s remarks that compared coronavirus safety measures with the treatment of Jews during the Holocaust
  • McCarthy released a statement saying “Marjorie is wrong, and her intentional decision to compare the horrors of the Holocaust with wearing masks is appalling”


DC attorney general files lawsuit against Amazon

  • On Tuesday, DC Attorney General Karl Racine announced that he is suing Amazon on antitrust grounds, alleging that the company unfairly raises prices for consumers and suppresses innovation
  • The lawsuit filed claims Amazon illegally maintained monopoly power by using contract provisions to prevent third-party sellers from offering their products for lower prices on other services, to which Amazon rejected doing


New federal cybersecurity regulations to come following pipeline hack

  • This week, the Transportation Security Administration, which oversees the US’s network of pipelines, is expected to announce new security directives to address issues raised by the hack that shut down the Colonial Pipeline a couple of weeks ago, resulting in major fuel shortages
  • The new regulations will require pipeline companies to report occurrences of cyber incidents to the federal government, which may prompt concern from private operators

Half of US adults are now vaccinated against coronavirus

  • On Tuesday, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention released data that showed around 129 million US adults are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19, reaching another milestone in the coronavirus vaccination efforts
  • That number is expected to increase as 61% of adults have already received one dose and children over 12 years old are now eligible for the Pfizer vaccine


Moderna states coronavirus vaccine is 100% effective in teens

  • On Tuesday, Moderna announced that their coronavirus vaccine was 100% effective in a study with adolescents aged 12-17, becoming the second coronavirus vaccine to demonstrate high efficacy in younger age groups
  • Moderna said it plans to ask the Food and Drug Administration to expand emergency use of its vaccine for teens early next month
