Biden gives keynote speech at DNC

  • Trump and Biden give rivalrous speeches as campaigns intensify, with Joe Biden prepping to accept his party’s nomination on the last night of the Democratic National Convention. Donald Trump paid a visit to Biden’s hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania
  • “The Scranton stuff, that’s why I figured I’d come here and explain to you one thing,” Trump said in his speech. “But I think you people know it better than I do: He left. He abandoned Pennsylvania.”
  • Biden assailed Trump for his handling of the coronavirus. "Our current President has failed in his most basic duty to the nation,” he said. “He has failed to protect us, he has failed to protect America."


Coup leaders in Mali aim for transitional government

  • The leaders of a coup in Mali said on Thursday a transitional president and council will be appointed, pulled either from the military or civilian population
  • While West African leaders have called for the previous president to be reinstated, the coup leaders promised to hold elections and stated they are in talks with the opposition
  • Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, who was elected to a second term in 2018, was ousted by the military on Tuesday after months of street protests against corruption and economic mismanagement


Former Uber security chief charged

  • The U.S. charged Joseph Sullivan, former chief security officer at Uber, for covering up a 2016 hack that exposed the personal information of 57 million of the firm’s users
  • Sullivan, allegedly with the awareness of then CEO Travis Kalanick, paid the hackers $100,000 through Uber’s bounty program and had them sign non-disclosure agreements stating they did not steal data
  • Uber’s current CEO Dara Khosrowshahi learned of the breach, fired Sullivan, then paid out $148 million to settle claims by all 50 states and D.C. that it was too slow to disclose the hack


TikTok cracks down on US users over hate speech

  • TikTok announced on Thursday that it has removed over 380,000 videos and banned more than 1,300 accounts from its platform in the U.S. this year for violating its hate speech policy
  • The company said it removed content such as race-based harassment and has a zero-tolerance policy toward organized hate groups and the denial of “violent tragedies” like slavery or the Holocaust
  • A review by the Anti-Defamation League this month found that the app was being used to spread white supremacy and anti-Semitism

Steve Bannon arrested on fraud charges

  • Steve Bannon, former top advisor and campaign chief for President Trump, was arrested on a yacht Thursday morning for allegedly funneling cash from the nonprofit ‘We Build The Wall’ to himself and its founder, Brian Kolfage
  • Bannon pleaded not guilty at an initial court appearance and was released on a $5 million bond with included travel restrictions
  • We Build The Wall raised over $25 million through crowdfunding to build a privately owned border wall along the southern border. Bannon allegedly used $1 million for personal expenses


New York expands mail-in voting

  • New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a law on Thursday allowing registered voters to cite fear of contracting COVID-19 as a reason for requesting an absentee ballot
  • The law also states that any ballot with a postmark indicating it was mailed on or before election day will be counted if it arrives by Nov. 10
  • In-person voting is still an option, though with 40% of votes in the last primary cast by mail, expectations of a surge in absentee voting come for the general election
