Kamala Harris endorses Joe Biden

  • U.S. Senator and former Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has endorsed Joe Biden for president, as of Sunday morning
  • Harris’ endorsement comes following a slew of former 2020 candidates who have given their support to Biden including Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar, and Beto O’ Rourke, among others
  • In her statement, Harris says that Biden "reflects the decency and dignity of the American people and who can ultimately defeat Donald Trump" with "a proven track record of getting things done"
  • Harris will campaign with Biden in Detroit on Monday as Michigan, among five other states ready for their primary poll on Tuesday

Northern Italy quarantines 16 million people

  • The Italian government has imposed a lockdown quarantine on its northern region, restricting upwards of sixteen million people of movement, as they try to fight COVID-19
  • The lockdown includes the entire Lombardy region and its capital city of Milan, as well as Venice, amounting to roughly a quarter of the Italian population
  • The Italian Civil Protection Department reported a total of 5,883 COVID-19 cases as of Saturday evening, with 233 deaths from the illness
  • Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced the closure of schools, gyms, museums, nightclubs and other venues across the whole country, effective through April 3rd

SXSW music festival canceled amid coronavirus fears

  • Austin, Texas has canceled annual music and arts festival SXSW due to fears of coronavirus transmission to fans and musicians
  • The organizers of SXSW announced in a blog saying that this is the first time in the event’s 34 year history that it has been canceled. The organizers claim that the decision was made by the city of Austin, and not the organizers themselves
  • SXSW joins a plethora of public events that have been canceled due to health concerns, including fan involvement in Italy’s Serie A, TED2020, and Ultra Music Festival

UK companies to invest £12bn in switch to electric vehicles

  • British companies are expected to spend upwards of twelve billion pounds in efforts to switch from traditional fossil fuel-powered vehicles to a cleaner electric fleet
  • The UK government will impose a ban in 2035 on the sale of new internal combustion engine vehicles in an effort to reduce the nation’s carbon footprint
  • More than a third of companies say the government’s looming ban on petrol and diesel cars has made them bring forward plans to shift to clean driving, according to a survey by the owner of British Gas

Man kicked out of Bernie Sanders rally after waving Nazi flag

  • A man waving a Nazi flag and shouting “Heil Hitler” was kicked out of a rally for Bernie Sanders on Thursday
  • Attendees say that the man was shouting anti-Jewish slurs at Sanders while performing the Nazi salute until removed by security
  • The Anti-Defamation League identified the perpetrator as Robert Sterkeson, a white supremacist who has "harassed a range of Jewish and Muslim organizations and events," often posting the stunts on YouTube

SPORTS 🏀

NBA continues to ramp up preparation for coronavirus spread

  • Through an internal league memo, the NBA has instructed team owners to have an arrangement with an infectious disease specialist, prepare COVID-19 testing, and limit staff that have close encounters with players in fear of a widespread outbreak of the virus
  • As the number of coronavirus cases within the U.S. grows larger, league commissioner Adam Silver has discussed the possibility of holding games with no fans in attendance, similar to what Italy has done with their soccer league
