First presidential debate complete

  • On Tuesday evening in Cleveland, Ohio, President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden faced off in their first debate of the 2020 election season. The debate was an overall unruly affair, as President Trump often talked over his opponent as well as the moderator—veteran Fox News anchor Chris Wallace 
  • Trump and Biden assumed different tactics throughout the debate, as Trump often worked to dominate the conversation by speaking over Biden, whereas Biden focused on speaking into the camera working to appeal to directly to American voters

Fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan escalates

  • Conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan has escalated in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, an area on Russia’s southern border claimed by both the Armenians and the Azerbaijanis. While the violence in Caucasia has continued since Armenia seceded from Azerbaijan thirty years ago, violence recently increased with drone strikes and civilian deaths in both countries
  • The attacks have caught the attention of the International Crisis Group, who believe that “if they [other countries] stay silent now, expect a real war." Currently, Russia, France, and the United States are formally in charge of international mediation between the two nations 

BUSINESS 💰

Airlines fight to remain economically afloat with Treasury Dept. loans

  • Seven major airlines in the U.S. have closed loan deals with the Treasury Department, whose efforts have been ongoing for months as part of provisions under the CARES act to preserve the employment of airline workers
  • As of October 1, the CARES act no longer protects some 30,000 jobs across multiple airlines, whose employment will be jeopardized despite several airlines receiving government financial relief

TECH 📱

Outages in Apple products impacts features across platforms

  • An outage late Tuesday evening left several Apple users without the ability to utilize many of Apple’s proprietary services, which concernedly included the ability to call 911 as well
  • The error message that has left so many without the functionality of their Apple devices is currently under the investigation of Apple, who declined to make further comments on the nature of the event

POLITICS 🏛️

Senator Schumer calls action to ObamaCare decision

  • In an allowed-but-unconventional move by Sen. Chuck Schumer, the Senate Minority Leader, Schumer took control of the Senate floor to effectively force a procedural vote on a bill that determines the future of the Affordable Care Act. This is rare as this move is typically done by the Senate Majority Leader
  • Senate Democrats are prioritizing the protection of the ACA in anticipation of the appointment of conservative judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court 

COVID-19 💉

Moderna COVID-19 vaccine showing promise

  • Safety studies conducted on older adults have shown Moderna’s COVID vaccine’s effectiveness in creating antibodies within the test groups, as shown in a study published to the New England Journal of Medicine
  • The study group, all older than 56, has demonstrated effectiveness on par with the results done on younger healthy adults, and with similar side effects to contemporary flu shots
