Georgia runoff elections kick off 

  • On Tuesday, Georgia residents took to the polls to determine both of the state’s Senate seats after neither candidate was able to secure 50% of the vote in November. The runoff is significant in that it will determine control of Senate leading into Biden’s presidency and signal a end to the 2020 election season 
  • At the end of Tuesday night, Rev. Raphael Warnock (D) led incumbent Kelly Loeffler (R), while incumbent Sen. David Perdue (R) led challenger Jon Ossoff (D) . However, with Perdue’s margin remaining under 2,000 votes, some have projected him to lose his lead as the final 2% of votes are counted 


Qatar-Saudi relations see improvement

  • On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia and its three Arab allies reached an agreement to restore full relations with Qatar, a decision that is being described as a “welcome development” 
  • The decision signals an end to the three and a half years of impasse between the nations, and was brokered by the United States and Kuwait 


Georgia battleground election shakes Wall Street

  • The Georgia runoff elections, which will determine control of the U.S. Senate, have left the state of the economy undetermined as state tax policies remain uncertain  
  • At present, market volatility from December has carried significantly into January, and with the emergence of new COVID strains, any gains made by the vaccine have been muddied


Verizon pauses shutdown of 3G network 

  • Verizon is pausing a previous effort to shutdown their 3G network indefinitely. Initially, Verizon hoped to shutdown 3G by the end of 2020 in an effort to move clients to newer technology, however the company has decided to allow the network to remain operational
  • The decision is beneficial only to existing users as no new phones are being activated on the 3G network (rather they are being placed on 4G LTE or 5G)

California expands COVID vaccine distribution 

  • With only 1% of the state population having received the COVID-19 vaccine, Governor Newsom of California is pushing for vaccines to be administered outside of the over-crowded hospitals, including by pharmacists, dentists, and National Guard members
  • The new public health waiver arrived in the wake of distribution and logistical hiccups that have plagued all of California during the vaccine rollout


Blacklisted Chinese telecom companies allowed to continue trading on NYSE

  • Three Chinese telecom companies—China Telecom Corp. Ltd., China Mobile Ltd. and China Unicom Hong Kong Ltd.,—who were all ordered, in an executive order from President Trump, to be removed from the New York Stock Exchange, have, in a new decision, been allowed to remain
  • In reaction, the Chinese Foreign Minister criticized the Trump administration’s politicization of trade rules and suppression of Chinese companies
