Biden Infrastructure Plan targets climate change

  • The President is calling for investment in renewable power and electric vehicles to reinforce the economy while tackling climate change
  • The $2.25 trillion infrastructure and stimulus blueprint reveals the organization of investments in a clean energy economy while encouraging low-emission technology tactics to mitigate global warming 
  • Biden’s proposal would provide a 10-year extension to tax credits benefitting renewable energy projects
  • According to a summary provided by the White House, the Biden plan would also drive about $174 billion of government funding towards electric vehicle initiatives  


New Zealand raises minimum range

  • The minimum wage will increase to $20 an hour which will positively impact several low-paid essential workers. Many of these affected individuals are working in border jobs or in airports and will be funded through additional taxes on the wealthy
  • The new rate will apply to anyone currently earning $180,000 a year, which accounts for about 2% of New Zealanders
  • The government predicts the increase of taxes will bring an additional $550 million in revenue for the year
  • OCED data reveals New Zealand’s previous minimum wage among the top five highest in the world as of 2019


Former Macy’s department store turns into high school

  • Downtown Burlington High School of Vermont has relocated to a space in the local shopping mall due to toxic industrial chemicals found within the school building during renovations
  • The empty department store caught the attention of school officials in their process of searching for space where students were able to attend school in person after learning remotely for most of the year
  • The building’s $3.5 million reconstruction added walls that separated space for classrooms while persevering some remains of the former store.


Apple Maps adds COVID-19 information for airport locations

  • The feature will display a summary of coronavirus-related procedures taking place at specific airports provided by the Airports Council International (ACI)
  • Place cards displaying the instructions will include an additional link to the airport’s website that will distribute more in-depth detail on the requirements
  • The information may include alerts reminding visitors of mask-wearing protocols, quarantine guidelines, or any testing requirements
  • Apple Maps is continuing to update based on the location of vaccination sites and testing centers while operating to present other notifications related to COVID-19

Governor Cuomo signs bill legalizing recreational marijuana in New York 

  • New York will join more than a dozen other states that have legalized recreational use of marijuana after years of attempts
  •  Cuomo signed the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act this past Wednesday morning after being confirmed by the New York State Assembly and Senate
  • The bill is set to expand New York’s current Medical Marijuana Program, while additionally generating a Social and Economic Equity Program that allows those disproportionately affected by cannabis enforcement to partake in the industry
  • The legalization will also banish penalties for possession of fewer than three ounces of cannabis, which will automatically remove the records of individuals holding convictions of past marijuana-related offenses


LGBTQ+ students file lawsuit against Department of Education

  • 33 LGBTQ students participating in the case claim they experienced discrimination at 25 federally funded Christian colleges and universities in 18 states.
  • The Religious Exemption Accountability Project filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Oregon in support of the affected students. The organization serves as an advocate for LQBTQ students studying at taxpayer-funded religious colleges 
  • Former Liberty University student Lucas Wilson said that the school offered conversion therapy in the form of a student club called “Band of Brothers,” while some classes openly taught “the evils of the homosexual lifestyle”
  • The purpose of the lawsuit is to eliminate Title IX’s religious exemption in which authorizes the intolerance of homosexual conduct and relationships
