Problems affect primary elections in Georgia  

  • Voting sites in majority minority counties saw delays and long lines for voting, in part due to social distancing, as well as to technical issues with new voting machines that limited the amount of ballots available
  • Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who is in charge of state elections, opened an investigation into how voting was conducted in certain counties, calling the situation “unacceptable”


North Korea severs all communication with South Korea

  • On Tuesday, North Korea announced the decision to end all communication with South Korea. The nation says the move was in response to their southern neighbor failing to prevent defectors (who fled to South Korea) from sending anti-North Korean pamphlets across the border
  • Some say the move could also be due to growing frustration with South Korea’s failure to revive inter-Korean economic projects and lacking attempts to persuade the U.S. to ease sanctions


Senate confirms first African American military service chief

  • In a unanimous 98-0 vote on Tuesday, General Charles Q. Brown was confirmed by the Senate as the next Air Force chief of staff. Brown is the first African American service chief and his confirmation comes as top Air Force officials have called to initiate conversations on racism within the military
  • Brown has been the commander of the Pacific Air Forces since 2018 and will take over for current Chief of Staff David Goldfein later this summer


IBM cancels facial recognition programs

  • In a letter to Congress, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna said the tech company wants to work with lawmakers to “advance justice and racial equality through police reform” and to start a dialogue on how facial recognition technology should be utilized in law enforcement
  • In recent weeks, as the United States has erupted into nationwide protests, civil liberties advocates have raised concerns about using surveillance technology to monitor protestors
  • The company will limit its visual technology to “visual object detection”, which could help assist manufacturing plants and farmers with crop care


Insurance telemarketers fined $255 million for 1 billion robocalls

  • The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has proposed the largest ever fine on two health insurance telemarketers—John Spiller and Jakob Mears—who the FCC say made robocalls through two businesses, Rising Eagle and JSquared Telecom
  • The FCC says the calls were made to appear to be from major companies like UnitedHealth and Cigna, but if a consumer asked for more information, they were transferred to a call center that didn’t sell plans connected to those companies
  • Multiple state attorney generals sued the two telemarketers for violating the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, the federal law that governs telemarketing


US economy entered recession in February

  • The Business Cycle Dating Committee of the National Bureau of Economic Research determined that the “unprecedented magnitude of the decline in employment and production” warranted the designation of the recession, ending the longest-ever expansion in history
  • The designation was notable for its speed, which can be attributed to the coronavirus pandemic and public health response 
  • The U.S. Federal Reserve is meeting this week to discuss economic projections that show how quick a recovery they expect
