  • A Georgia state investigator testified on Thursday that Travis McMichael, the man who fatally shot Ahmaud Arbery in February, was heard using a racial slur whilst standing over Arbery’s body
  • The testimony was brought forth during a hearing to determine if enough evidence was present to proceed with a murder trial

Chinese, Iranian hackers target Trump and Biden campaigns 

  • Google’s director of Threat Analysis, Shane Huntley, disclosed that Chinese and Iranian state-backed hackers targeted the campaigns of Donald Trump and Joe Biden
  • Hacker groups sent phishing attempts to staffers at the respective campaigns. While evidence of the attacks have been confirmed, there was no clear evidence that suggested the attacks were successful

Libyan government recaptures Tripoli from eastern rebels

  • After fourteen months of fighting, Libya’s internationally recognized government recaptured the capital of Tripoli on Thursday, forcing Haftar rebels into a retreat
  • Following the retreat, both sides have agreed to resume UN-brokered ceasefire diplomacy.
  • The shift in Libya’s civil war marked a pause in the bombardment of Tripoli’s southern suburbs, which has included rocket attacks on hospitals

Uber removes delivery fees for black-owned businesses

  • Customers of Uber Eats are now able to order from black-owned businesses without paying a delivery fee, the company announced Thursday.
  • The fee removal, which was launched in the midst of nationwide protest over the death of George Floyd, will be active until the end of 2020.
  • Uber will also offer discounted ride-hailing trips to black-owned small businesses affected by the coronavirus pandemic

Facebook suppresses “boogaloo” groups 

  • Facebook announced Thursday that it will no longer recommend groups associated with the term “Boogaloo,” a right-wing extremist movement that promotes the idea of civil war and the collapse of society
  • The move comes just one day after three Las Vegas men associated with the movement were arrested for allegedly plotting to attack the protesting of George Floyd’s death

HEALTH 💉

CDC director: protesters should get tested for COVID-19 

  • Robert Redfield, director for the CDC, said that protesters should “highly consider” getting tested for COVID-19
  • Redfield told a House panel that Minneapolis and Washington D.C. are two metropolitan areas that still have high rates of transmission.
  • The advice came after a warning from infectious disease experts that the use of tear gas and pepper spray can help spread coronavirus.
