Department of Justice seeks to represent Trump in E. Jean Carroll defamation lawsuit

  • In 2019, writer E. Jean Carroll sued President Trump for defamation after he publicly denied allegations of sexually assaulting her in the 1990s
  • Attorney General William Barr defended the DOJ’s decision to represent the president, stating that because Trump addressed and denied the accusations while in office, the federal government was allowed to intervene
  • Barr also stated that American taxpayers, not Trump personally, will be responsible for any monetary damages awarded to Carroll if the case moves forward allowing the DOJ’s involvement


EU warns Boris Johnson threatening to override elements of Brexit deal could break international law

  • On Tuesday, Northern Ireland’s Secretary of State Brandon Lewis confirmed that the UK government would be willing to “break international law in a very specific and limited way” by ignoring parts of a UK-EU withdrawal agreement signed last year if a free trade agreement cannot be reached within the coming weeks
  • The 2019 agreement gave Northern Ireland the same trade rules and standards as the EU, but legislation introduced to UK Parliament on Wednesday could unravel those protections to guarantee an open border between the UK and Ireland


New book details Trump downplayed coronavirus threat

  • In journalist Bob Woodward’s new book Rage, Trump admits that he knew weeks before the first confirmed US coronavirus death that the virus was highly contagious, airborne, and more severe than the flu
  • Recordings of Trump and Woodward’s conversations reveal that Trump “wanted to always play it down” to avoid creating a panic
  • Tensions within the White House regarding transparency with the public during the pandemic have not dissipated, with recently unveiled emails detailing a Trump-appointed official at the Department of Health and Human Services trying to prevent Anthony Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease expert, from speaking out about risks coronavirus poses to children


JC Penney rescued from bankruptcy

  • US mall owners Simon Property Group and Brookfield Property Partners are close to finalizing an $800 million deal to rescue the struggling department store chain from total liquidation, saving about 70,000 jobs and 650 stores
  • JC Penney’s troubles have been compounding in recent years, but the coronavirus pandemic caused them to accelerate, resulting in JC Penney filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May

Rochester police chief and entire command staff resign following death of Daniel Prude

  • These resignations come as outrage ensued over the death of Daniel Prude, a Black man with mental health issues who was caught on video being put in a “spit hood” and restrained by officers back in March
  • Last Thursday, Rochester, NY Mayor Lovely Warren announced seven officers involved with Prude’s death were suspended. On Saturday, New York Attorney Letitia Wright authorized a state jury to investigate Prude’s death


Microsoft set to release two new Xbox consoles

  • On Wednesday, Microsoft announced both the high-end Xbox Series X and the entry-level Xbox Series S will be available on November 10
  • Though the Xbox Series S is about $200 cheaper than the Xbox Series X, the Series X will offer about double the GPU performance and storage, higher output resolutions, and a 4K UHD Blu-Ray drive
  • Though the strategy of releasing one console at a time has been successful and the general trend of the past, Microsoft is testing new ways to operate within the console market
