  • On Monday, the Electoral College voted to affirm Joe Biden’s victory over President Trump
  • The individual electors in all 50 states and the District of Columbia casted ballots to reflects their respective state’s popular vote resulting in a 306-232 victory for Biden
  • The electoral voting process, normally a procedural formality, was in the limelight following Trump’s legal and legislative challenges to overturn the election’s results


Russian intelligence FSB hit squad behind poisoning of opposition leader according to new report

  • Independent investigative group Bellingcat claims to have identified the Russian intelligence team behind the poisoning of opposition leader Alexey Navalny
  • Bellingcat published a detail report in which it used phone and flight records to show that a team from the Federal Security Service (FSB), Russia’s domestic intelligence outfit, had been trailing Navalny for years and were in his vicinity before he fell sick
  • Navalny, Russia’s most prominent opposition leader, fell ill on a flight from Tomsk in August and has been in Germany receiving treatment. A German lab identified the poison as a Novichok nerve agent


FTC orders tech companies to explain collection and usage of personal data

  • The Federal Trade Commission has asked nine tech companies to provide information about how they collect and use their users’ data
  • Amazon, TikTok, Discord, Facebook, Whatsapp, Reddit, Snap, Twitter, and YouTube received requests to provide information about their data practices
  • The FTC is using its authority under Section 6(b) of the FTC Act to pursue broad studies independent of law enforcement


Apple’s to display privacy labels showing what information apps collect from users

  • Apple has updated its app store to display “privacy labels” regarding what information various apps collect
  • The labels are highlighted below the option to download the app
  • A majority of the apps will have as many as three labels based on information app developers are required to provide to Apple

Attorney General William Barr resigns

  • Attorney General William Barr has stated that he will resign next week after tenure spent carrying out Trump’s “law and order” message
  • Barr’s departure was tweeted by Trump shortly after the Electoral College voted in Joe Biden
  • Despite the tensions between Trump and Barr, the President claimed Barr’s resignation was amicable


'New variant' of coronavirus identified in England

  • England’s Health Secretary Matt Hancock has told British officials that a new variant of coronavirus has been found and at least 60 different local authorities have recorded Covid infections as a result of the new variant
  • The WHO has been notified and scientists across the UK are doing further detailed investigations
  • The secretary also stated that there is “nothing to suggest” that the new strain caused a worse disease or that vaccines would be ineffective
