Myanmar military takes control of government

  • On Monday, Myanmar’s military seized control of Myanmar’s government and arrested democratically-elected leaders Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior National League for Democracy (NLD) officials 
  • Army chief Min Aung Hlaing—who has faced US sanctions since December 2019 for human rights abuse charges against the Rohingya Muslim community—stepped into power
  • Widespread internet and communications blackout ensued and residents could only access the military-owned Myawaddy TV channel. Facebook banned the military’s television network Facebook page shortly afterward


Jeff Bezos to step down as Amazon CEO

  • On Tuesday, Jeff Bezos announced he will be stepping down as Amazon’s CEO and will transition to executive chairman of Amazon’s board
  • Andy Jassy, chief executive of Amazon Web Services, will take over as CEO of the mega-retailer starting in the third quarter of the year


Defense secretary clears out Pentagon advisory boards

  • On Tuesday, it was announced that newly-confirmed defense secretary Lloyd Austin, ordered hundreds of Pentagon advisory board members to resign, a move motivated by concerns that the Trump administration rushed a series of last-minute appointments, some of whom were pro-Trump loyalists
  • Austin also temporarily suspended all advisory board operations until the review was completed or unless otherwise directed by Austin himself


iPhone update will allow FaceID to be used while masks worn

  • In Apple’s iOS 14.5 update for iPhones, users will be able to utilize FaceID while wearing a mask, but only if a user has an accompanied unlocked Apple Watch
  • The new feature takes advantage of Bluetooth signal strength and the fact that Apple Watches can sense when it’s been removed from a user’s wrist through a heart-rate sensor
  • Face masks have proven difficult for Apple, who switched a majority of their newer products from fingerprint recognition to facial recognition—which currently requires an unexposed face to unlock

Rochester police officers removed from patrol after 9-year-old girl is handcuffed and pepper-sprayed

  • One Rochester police officer was suspended and two others were placed on administrative leave after a released video showed police restraining a 9-year-old girl and attempting to get her in the back of a police car
  • The incident sparked protests within the community. Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren stated, “this is not something that any of us should want to justify, can justify and is something we have to change”


Biden administration will begin direct shipments of vaccines to pharmacies

  • On Tuesday, the Biden administration announced it will begin shipping coronavirus vaccines directly to retail pharmacies as soon as next week to increase vaccine distribution efforts
  • The White House listed 21 national pharmacy chains—including Rite Aid, CVS, and Walgreens—that will participate in the initial rollout phase to 6500 stores
