Manhattan will no longer prosecute prostitution

  • On Wednesday, Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance, Jr. announced that the Manhattan district office will no longer be prosecuting prostitution and unlicensed massage cases. The office will also dismiss hundreds of those cases, many of which date back to the 1970s and 1980s
  • The office stated the new policy will prevent unnecessary future contacts with the criminal justice system and encourage healthier relationships between New Yorkers and law enforcement

Fire in South Africa hits University of Cape Town

  • On Sunday, a fire broke out on Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Strong winds fueled the fire as it came in contact with downtown Cape Town
  • 90% of the fire was contained by Tuesday, however, the University of Cape Town was one of the first sites to be damaged by the fire. Numerous university buildings were burned, including a 100-year-old library containing rare books and manuscripts on African studies

South Korea court dismisses ‘comfort women’ lawsuit against Japan

  • On Wednesday, a South Korean court dismissed a lawsuit brought by a group of women who sought compensation from Japan for being forced to work in Japanese wartime brothels during the 1900s. Wednesday’s ruling contradicted an earlier ruling that ordered Japan to compensate the victims
  • Japan has insisted in the past that all wartime compensation issues were settled by a 1965 treaty that normalized relations between the two nations

European Union proposes restrictions on AI and facial recognition use

  • On Wednesday, the European Union’s executive body announced a new proposal that would limit the use of facial recognition and other “high risk” applications of artificial intelligence
  • The regulations proposed would prohibit law enforcement officials from using facial recognition with the exceptions of responding to terrorist attacks and missing children

Chipotle earnings top estimates, prompted by online orders

  • On Wednesday, the restaurant Chipotle exceeded first-quarter earnings expectations, earning $127.1 million compared to $76.4 million earned in the first quarter of 2020
  • Chipotle says that new menu items and ongoing online order requests, which have overtaken in-person ordering for the first time, helped push sales more than 20% higher

22 dead after oxygen leak cuts off supply to ventilators

  • On Wednesday, 22 coronavirus patients in an Indian hospital passed away when the oxygen supply to their ventilators was cut off due to a leak
  • Coronavirus cases are surging in India as many Indian states have requested emergency help from the government over shortages of oxygen, hospital beds, vaccines, and medicine
