Two autopsies find that George Floyd died by homicide  

  • The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office released reports Monday showing that Floyd died of "cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint and neck compression.” However, an independent autopsy reported that Floyd died of asphyxiation due to neck and back compression
  • Both reports differ from the criminal complaint lodged last week against the officer, where preliminary findings suggested that underlying health issues combined with police restraint and “potential intoxicants in his system” likely contributed to Floyd’s death


Full-scale Republican National Convention in Charlotte, NC is ‘very unlikely’

  • In a letter sent to Republican leaders, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper stated that coronavirus conditions may prevent August’s full-capacity convention. However, Cooper said he is willing to continue discussions about a scaled-down convention
  • Despite hopes to keep the convention in Charlotte, Republican leaders are considering other potential locations including Nashville, Las Vegas, and Orlando 


PPP loan money remains untouched 

  • After a rush to replenish the Paycheck Protection Program with $310 billion on April 27, more than $120 billion—designated for small businesses—remains untapped
  • In the first round of funding, the Small Business Administration processed $350 billion worth of loans in 2 weeks
  • The average loan amount has fallen to $114,000 from the first round, which some say is a sign that capital is truly reaching small businesses


France releases coronavirus tracing app that sparks debate over privacy

  • France’s StopCovid app aims to contain new outbreaks of coronavirus as the country’s lockdown restrictions are gradually being lifted
  • While it has been commended for its potential to protect others, there is concern that tracing apps like these allow for more government surveillance
  • Neighboring countries—specifically Germany, Italy, and the UK—are developing their own apps with different technical protocols, raising concerns about compatibility across country borders


Philippines suspends termination of defense pact with the United States

  • Philippines' termination of the Visiting Forces Agreement, established in 1998 to allow for American troops to enter the Philippines for joint combat training with Filipino troops, has been delayed by at least six months
  • The Philippines notified the US in February with the intention of terminating the pact in August. The delay may be extended into 2021, and would be welcomed by the United States who have gladly accepted the initial delay


Ebola resurfaces in Democratic Republic of Congo

  • On Monday, UNICEF reported the Ebola-related deaths of five people in Mbandaka, a city in the north-western region of the Democratic Republic of Congo 
  • The Democratic Republic of Congo is still recovering from the 2018 Ebola outbreak, which has been noted to be in its final phase. Along with the new outbreak, the country faces major challenges as they also battle coronavirus and measles
