NBA and MLB teams refuse to play games to protest shooting of Jacob Blake 

  • On Wednesday, the Milwaukee Bucks refused to play their NBA playoff game against the Orlando Magic as a form of protest. The NBA then announced two other playoff games scheduled for Wednesday would be rescheduled
  • In a statement released by the Bucks’s players, the team calls on the Wisconsin state legislature to reconvene to “take up meaningful measures to address issues of police accountability, brutality, and criminal justice reform”
  • Following the Bucks’s decision, 3 MLB games on Wednesday night– Milwaukee Brewers vs. Cincinnati Reds, Seattle Mariners vs. San Diego Padres, and L.A. Dodgers vs. San Francisco Giants– were postponed as teams elected not to play

US sanctions 24 Chinese firms over role in South China Sea

  • On Wednesday, the U.S. Commerce Department blacklisted 24 Chinese companies they say are helping the Chinese Communist Party construct artificial islands to support military installations in the South China Sea, which the US identifies as a military provocation  
  • The State Department also announced it would soon begin imposing visa restrictions on Chinese citizens “responsible for, or complicit in, either the large-scale reclamation, construction, or militarization of disputed outposts in the South China Sea”
Context: The US has accused China of militarizing the South China Sea to intimidate other Asian countries who might want to utilize its rich oil and gas reserves. China claims about 90% of the South China Sea, which sees about $3 trillion of trade pass through it annually

FDA approves $5 COVID-19 test that takes 15 minutes

  • The test—called BinaxNOW and produced by health care company Abbott—doesn’t require lab equipment to test and runs on a card that incorporates the same technology as a pregnancy test
  • The FDA released a statement Wednesday saying that the test can be used in emergency rooms, doctors’ offices, and even schools
  • The company plans to produce 50 million tests per month by October

Two killed and one injured during shooting at Kenosha protests

  • Authorities arrested 17-year-old Illinois resident Kyle Rittenhouse and charged him with first-degree intentional homicide after videos captured gunshot sounds during protests in Wisconsin late Tuesday night
  • Investigators are looking into whether the shooting was the result of a conflict that broke out between demonstrators and a group of armed men guarding a business
  • Kenosha, WI enters the third night of civil unrest as hundreds gather to protest the shooting of Jacob Blake, a black man, by police officers

Facebook claims Apple’s iOS 14 will disrupt online advertising 

  • Currently, Apple assigns each of their devices a unique code called the IDFA that allows advertisers to track user activity and create targeted ads on different apps
  • For the iOS 14 update, each app that wants to use IDFAs will have to ask users to opt into tracking when the app first launches. In a blog post released on Wednesday, Facebook stated this could lead to a more than 50% drop in its Audience Network advertising business program

IRS to mail 50,000 wrongly withheld stimulus checks in September

  • In a rush to send out checks earlier this year, the IRS mistakenly diverted payments from individuals to pay for their spouses’ past-due child support
  • The mistake was due to a loophole in the stimulus payments that allowed the IRS to withhold checks from recipients behind in child support payments, but the decision inadvertently affected their spouses as well, even though they were not responsible for paying child support
