Harris and Pence face off in vice presidential debate

  • On Wednesday night, Senator Harris and Vice President Pence faced off in Utah during their first and only debate, discussing a wide range of topics including the handling of the coronavirus pandemic, climate change, healthcare, criminal justice, and election security
  • Extra precautions were taken in preparation for this debate following Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis. Harris and Pence were seated 12 feet apart from one another, plexiglass barriers were installed on stage, and masks were required by the audience

Leaders of Greece neo-Nazi group found guilty of operating criminal organization

  • On Wednesday, the leaders of Golden Dawn—once the third-largest party in Greece—were found guilty of forming and running a criminal organization under the identity of a political party
  • 18 former party lawmakers, including leader Nikos Michaloliakos, were among those found guilty
  • The decision was celebrated and hailed as a victory for democracy, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stating that the decision was “truly historic… for Greece, democracy and the rule of law"


Facebook bans QAnon across all its platforms

  • On Tuesday, Facebook announced it will remove QAnon pages and groups, as well as Instagram accounts that “represent” the conspiracy movement
  • Facebook escalated their August policy that banned a third of QAnon groups for promoting violence, but relied mainly on user reports
  • The site follows other social media platforms cracking down QAnon like Twitter, which announced in July that they would no longer serve content or accounts associated with QAnon


Billionaires see their wealth rise by 27% during coronavirus pandemic

  • According to a report by the Swiss bank UBS, the world’s richest saw their wealth climb to a record-high of $10.2 trillion during the height of the pandemic from April to July 
  • The report found that billionaires benefited most from betting on the recovery of global stock markets when they were at their lowest point in March and April

Derek Chauvin released on $1 million bond

  • On Wednesday, the former Minneapolis police officer charged with killing George Floyd was released from custody on a conditional release that he abide by all laws, have no contact with Floyd’s family, surrender all guns and firearms licenses, and stay in Minnesota
  • Chauvin’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 8, 2021, the day his trial is set to begin 


CA Governor signs executive order to preserve the state's lands and waters

  • On Wednesday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced an executive order that aims to conserve 30% of California’s coastal waters and lands by 2030
  • The order seeks to improve the state’s climate resilience and reduce risks from “extreme climate events”
  • There’s been a national “30 by 30” movement that calls protect 30% of federal lands and waters by 2030, and resolutions regarding this goal have been introduced in both the House and Senate
