A fifth of US-related QAnon posts originated in foreign countries

  • A new report has found that individuals outside the US played a significant role in spreading QAnon related conspiracy theories on Facebook
  • The analysis done during the study found that the disinformation, which originated in China and Russia, further spread the QAnon movement that has been linked to domestic terrorism 
  • New York’s Soufan Center, a research firm that specializes in national security threats, found that around 20% of the 166,820 QAnon related posts on Facebook between Jan 2020 and Feb 2021 came from foreign sources

Russian increases troop count in Crimea on Ukraine border

  • The number of Russian troops deployed in Russian-occupied Crimea near the Ukrainian border has continually increased over the past two weeks, surpassing the size of the force that annexed Crimea in 2014
  • A spokesperson for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenkskiy stated last week that there were around 80,000 troops stationed along the border, with 40,000 of them in Crimea
  • Russian annexed Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula in 2014 using troops in unmarked uniforms and also backed separatists in eastern Ukraine

Tobacco stocks drop after announcement of plan to cap cigarette nicotine levels

  • Tobacco stocks fell sharply on Monday following reports claiming that the Biden administration is looking to cap nicotine levels in cigarettes
  • The Biden administration is deliberating on whether to reduce nicotine levels in addition to a menthol ban or introduce it as a separate policy
  • While nicotine itself doesn’t cause cancer, it does making smoking more addictive. The goal of reducing nicotine levels would lead to cigarettes being less addictive 

TECH 📱

Apple allows Parler back in the App Store

  • Apple has approved Parler’s return to the iOS app store after the company made improvements to detect and moderate hate speech and incitement according to a letter sent by Apple to Congress
  • The decision will allow Parler, a popular app among far-right conservatives, to be downloaded onto Apple devices
  • The letter, which was addressed to Sen. Mike Lee and Rep. Ken Buck, explained that since the app was removed from the iOS app store it has “proposed updates to its app and the app’s content moderation practices”

Jimmy Carter’s former vice president dies at 93

  • Walter Frederick “Fritz” Mondale, who served as VP under President Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 93
  • Mondale passed away at home in Minneapolis surrounded by his family
  • Mondale won the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and made history by naming a woman, US Rep. Geraldine A. Ferraro, as his running mate before losing out to Ronald Reagan 

HEALTH ❤️ 

Only 6,000 Americans have contracted COVID after full vaccination

  • US health officials have confirmed fewer than 6,000 cases of Covid-19 in fully vaccinated Americans
  • That number represents around 0.007% of the 84 million Americans that have been fully vaccinated and shows that the vaccines are working as intended
  • The CDC also acknowledged that the number could be an underestimate
