  • Most Middle Eastern economies have declined since October according to a report by the International Monetary Fund
  • Iraq is considered one of the most vulnerable countries, as its economy relies primarily on oil exports. While travel has come to a pause due to the pandemic, the demand for fuel dwindled

Apple willing to invest $3.6 billion into Kia Motors 

  • At Apple’s request, the funds will be used to build exclusive production facilities and the development of an electric Apple Car
  • A report by Korean outlet, Donga IIbo, reveals that the collaboration may be made official on February 17th
  • If the plan is confirmed, the launch of the Apple Car will take place in 2024, with the initial target of producing 100,000 cars per year

Instagram creates 'Recently Deleted' folder 

  • The social media platform added a folder that enables users to retrieve posts that were deleted within the past 30 days
  • This function allows recently hacked users the ability to restore lost content that would otherwise be unattainable
  • Instagram will ask the user to verify that they are the rightful account holders before accessing the folder
  • To access this new feature, users must update the Instagram app to the latest version

US 🦅

Five-year extension of nuclear weapon treaty with Russia approved by U.S. 

  • The extension of the new START ballistic missile treaty will set limits on the delivery of nuclear weapons between the U.S. and Russia through 2026
  • The limits are established for both land and submarine-based ballistic missiles, as well as heavy bombers
  • The Trump administration refrained from discussing the treaty until last year while applying a set of demands for the extension to be approved
  • The treaty will provide the U.S. with “greater insight into Russia’s nuclear posture,” according to a statement from Secretary of State Antony Blinken

Olympics 🏅

Tokyo Olympics President says he won't resign 

  • Yoshiro Mori, currently serving as the President of the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee, stated that he does not intend to resign from his position following derogatory remarks regarding women made earlier this week 
  • "I am not thinking to resign," Mori said. "I have been working hard and helped devotedly for seven years. I will not be stepping down" 
  • Mori issued an apology to those he may have offended on Thursday
  • The games, scheduled to begin on July 23rd of this year, are currently in limbo, as organizers are still at the mercy of the ongoing pandemic
