Trump accepts Republican nomination

  • Incumbent President Trump accepted his party’s nomination on the final night of the RNC in front of a tightly packed crowd, many of whom were maskless, on the South Lawn of the White House
  • “Joe Biden is not the savior of America’s soul,” Trump said. “He is the destroyer of America’s jobs, and if given the chance, he will be the destroyer of America’s greatness”
  • His remarks elicited frequent cheers from supporters, though fact-checkers spotted numerous false or misleading claims, while the use of federal property for political activity appeared to violate the Hatch Act



Putin may send police to Belarus

  • Vladimir Putin said he has formed a reserve police force for Belarus at the behest of President Alexander Lukashenko Thursday
  • Putin said he would not send the force into Belarus unless “extremist elements using political slogans as cover cross a certain boundary and start armed robbery, setting fire to cars, houses, banks, try to seize government buildings and so forth”
  • Lukashenko has faced condemnation for violently suppressing protests over a widely contested election on Aug. 9 that secured his 26-year rule

Walmart teams up with Microsoft in joint TikTok bid

  • Walmart joined Microsoft in a bid to purchase TikTok’s U.S. operations on Thursday, putting the two in competition with software company Oracle during the final stages of the deal
  • If the Walmart-Microsoft duo secures the TikTok property, they could turn it into an e-commerce app for both users and creators, sources close to the negotiations claim
  • If Oracle secures the deal, it could use TikTok’s data regarding social interactions to benefit its cloud, the company stated

Hurricane Laura makes landfall, devastates communities

  • Hurricane Laura tore through parts of Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi Thursday, leveling homes and cutting off power to over 900,000 people while killing at least six
  • In Louisiana, the worst-hit state, four people were crushed to death by falling trees, one man was killed by carbon monoxide from a generator running inside his residence, and another drowned after a boat sank during the storm
  • Assessment teams were unable to access the town of Cameron, Louisiana, where Laura first struck, due to flooding and debris blocking the roads


NHL joins protest over Jacob Blake’s death, among others

  • The NHL postponed playoff games scheduled for Thursday and Friday, joining boycotts held by the NBA, WNBA, MLB, and MLS over the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin
  • Nike, Adidas, and Gatorade voiced their support for the boycotts Thursday, while Under Armour and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson postponed the launch of a new sneaker collaboration
  • The NBA hopes to continue playing as early as Friday, though police in Kenosha, Wisconsin have remained largely silent on questions about Blake’s shooting
