Biden lands commanding victory in South Carolina

  • Presidential candidate Joe Biden handily won South Carolina’s Democratic primary race, on Saturday, winning by a margin of 28.5 points over the second-place candidate, Bernie Sanders
  • Biden was able to land sixty-one percent of the African-American vote, placing him much higher in that demographic than anyone else in the race, with Sanders again placing second with seventeen percent
  • Biden’s win, after gaining little traction in Iowa and New Hampshire, is expected to give him momentum heading into Super Tuesday

Greece sends military to Turkish border

  • Greece activated additional military troops to the country’s northern border with Turkey in order to fortify the area and repel a stream of migrants after Turkey opened a passage into the European Union over the weekend
  • The fortification comes after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed that he was opening the border into the European Union states, claiming that his country can no longer handle the influx of migrants from Syria
  • The Greek government sent out mass text messages to all phone numbers at the border: “From the Hellenic Republic: Greece is increasing border security to level maximum. Do not attempt illegally to cross the border”

Buttigieg suspends campaign

  • Following a poor showing in the South Carolina primary, Pete Buttigieg has suspended his campaign for the presidential race
  • Buttigieg’s exit from the presidential race comes just under a month after declaring victory in the Iowa caucus, and surprisingly just days before Super Tuesday
  • Buttigieg struggled to get votes from non-white individuals, leading to falling numbers in more diverse states after strong showings in predominantly white Iowa and New Hampshire


Twitter verifies fake presidential candidate

  • A seventeen-year-old high school student from upstate New York created a twitter account for a fake politician named Andrew Walz, who was presented as a Republican from Rhode Island
  • Twitter verified the fake account, denoting that Walz is a real politician holding an authentic government position
  • Twitter claims to have inadvertently verified the Walz account as part of the company's broader push to verify the authenticity of many Senate, House and gubernatorial candidates currently running for office


McDonald’s to give away free Egg McMuffins

  • McDonald's deemed Monday "National Egg McMuffin Day" and is luring people in with free sandwiches. The fast-food giant also said in a press release that the day is intended to celebrate the "best" fast food breakfast sandwich as it also turns 50 this year
  • The announcement came shortly after competing fast-food company Wendy’s revealed their new breakfast items
  • The free offer is valid from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM in participating McDonald’s stores across the US


Vanessa Bryant calls for the punishment of deputies that shared crash photos

  • The widow of NBA star Kobe Bryant is “absolutely devastated" after allegations of deputies sharing graphic photos of the helicopter crash scene where Bryant, their 13-year-old daughter, and seven others were killed
  • The Los Angeles Times reported on Thursday that a public safety source with knowledge of the events saw one of the photos on the phone of another official in a setting that was not related to the investigation of the crash
  • The official said the photos showed the scene and victims’ remains. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the allegations
